What We’re Watching and Listening To Right Now, Week Ending 7-2-11
We’ve been extra-busy around here this past week, and here’s what we’ve been watching and listening to that’s been keeping us going!
Rob Greelee, Zune Podcast Manager: This has been an exciting week of listening and watching great podcasts in the Zune Podcast Marketplace. I have been enjoying the first episode of a NEW Exclusive to Zune podcast series from Kevin Smith’s SModcast Network called “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave: Overkill“. This new series is co-hosted by Bryan Johnson and Walt Flanagan who are both actors from such movies as ‘Mallrats’ and ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’. Overkill is a comedy series that also features a third co-host named Brian Quinn and has new episodes in this series every Monday. Walt and Bryan are guests this week on episode 122 of the Zune Insider Podcasts and discuss the new show. This Zune Insider episode is up and live here.
The other big new video podcasts that I am watching on Zune this week are free full premiere episodes from two Showtime TV shows – ‘Weeds‘ and ‘The Big C‘. ‘Weeds’ is out with its 7th season and ‘The Big C’ is just coming out with a second season.
Marques Lyons, Zune MVP: Next week, I’m going to go see a screening of a documentary by Michael Rapaport dealing with the breakup and influence of hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Therefore, I spent some of this week listening and revisiting some of their back catalog. Some of my favorite tracks from them include “Phony Rappers“, “Award Tour” and “Bonita Applebum“. They were, indeed one of those great conscious rap groups. I also dug the new release of the ‘Catch Me If You Can’ Broadway soundtrack, especially “Don’t Break The Rules”. Finally, I’m glad Keith Olbermann is back on TV and that Current TV got his new “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” podcast up and running so quickly (even if they do break the show into segments instead of giving full episodes).
Matt Singley, Zune Social Media: Although I haven’t watched any of the episodes yet, I just downloaded seasons 3 and 4 of ‘Mad Men‘ from the Marketplace. Can’t wait to finally catch up!
My music taste has been pretty eclectic this week. I’m listening to a lot of Fabolous and Chamillionaire, but also Matt Nathanson and Temper Trap. Guess you can’t just pin down one genre for me.
My guilty pleasure has been the new album from LMFAO…great background music that really keeps things upbeat.
Josh Groth, Zune Social Media: Let’s see, given the holiday weekend vibe, I’ve been listening to a lot of stuff to power me through the work week and into the weekend sun. Namely, David Guetta has released two new tracks that have both been seeing some heavy rotation on my speakers – “Little Bad Girl (ft. Ludacris and Taio Cruz)” and “Where Them Girls At (ft. Nicki Minaj)“.
Matt intro’d me to Felix Da Housecat – been playing both of his albums a lot this week.
And last but not least I’ve been loving on Andy Grammer’s album, as well as Matt Nathanson’s newest album ‘Modern Love‘.
Vicki Dolenga, Zune Social Media: I know I’m lucky to be living in LA for many reasons, but high on the list are getting to do cool things like what I did this past Thursday – I visited Incubus‘ Headquarters! Other bands have done similar things, but Incubus has taken it to a new level. Fans are able to come for hour time slots to check out the band’s equipment, draw and paint on the walls (paper that’s on the walls, but still), meet other fans, chat with the band’s manager and others working for the band – and yes, the band members also occasionally come in and wander around. Some band members are also doing drum and guitar clinics, where fans can actually learn from them! It’s a casual but very welcoming place, and even more amazing – Incubus is playing invite-only shows each night at the space! Everyone who comes in for a time slot has a chance as they pick 6 people from each hour (I was not chosen, alas – it just wasn’t my lucky day!), and even if you aren’t local, you can watch what’s going on at HQ as well as the concerts each night on Incubus HQ TV. You can also see photos taken at HQ over on their Facebook page. So, accordingly, I’ve been listening to lots of Incubus’ older stuff as well as the two singles from ‘If Not Now, When?’ (“Adolescents” and “Promises, Promises“) which is coming out in 10 days. Can’t wait for the album – and for their concert in October!
Watching… I’m hoping to start an older series that I’ve heard so much about – ‘Firefly‘. There are a number of sci-fi shows that I’ve missed out on, and I really need to fix that.
