Hi folks – Some of you might have read today’s report on CNET about the Zune re-organization. If you haven’t already seen it, click to hear from the new head of the Zune business, Enrique Rodriguez, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s TV business and now Zune.

If you’re pressed for time, here’s the short version:

  • We are combining the Zune software team with the Connected TV organization (Windows Media Center, Mediaroom) to create a single group focused on creating software and services that enable great entertainment experiences across the PC, TV, mobile phones and Zune devices.
  • The Zune device hardware team joined the mobile communications business group to create a center of excellence in portable hardware. This will bring people who live and breathe hardware together.
  • The priority now is to focus on delivering against our current product roadmaps across each team in the new organization. That means new software, services and devices for Zune customers.

In a nutshell, this is an extension of the way we’ve been taking the business for some time. We’ve said before the strategy for Zune is to provide a great entertainment experience across multiple screens and devices and this move will help us deliver that. We’re looking at how the powerful features of Zune can be combined with the work in the TV space to deliver a broader entertainment experience.

As Enrique put it, “The goal is to make non-gaming entertainment a first-class citizen within Microsoft's business, that means building better software and gaining scale a little further out than just in Redmond."

For our current customers, this internal, organizational adjustment won’t result in any changes. Like I said above we’re still committed to delivering the next wave of the Zune hardware, software and services – and we will do so this calendar year, so stay tuned.

But now our charter is broader, and more exciting, and we can’t wait to take Zune to the next level for customers!

But does this mean that Canadians will be able to get in on the Marketplace action?

While Microsoft's own post on this newfangled Zune initiative has absolutely nothing to do directly with Windows Mobile 6.5, we wouldn't push that inkling of integration too far away. In fact, Redmond has just that on the brain, with "that" being "integra

This is big news... I really hope this turns out to be a good thing, not other hardware manufacturers making shoddy hardware and throwing the Zune UI on it, that would suck. I'm really glad that the team decided to keep the hardware division though, I love my zune 120, and I loved my 30 and 80 (and 8). Hopefully this works out well, and I wish the best of luck to the Zune team and their new head of Zune business.

This sounds like an amazing move. But how are you going to localize what people download? Would we still sync to our PC/Network?

I think we all saw this coming from a mile away; I always assumed Microsoft would expand Zune software and de-emphasize hardware, since Microsoft is primariliy a software company after all.

Hopefully this means Zune replaces *everything* as Microsoft's media software... Zune on Windows Mobile, Windows Media Center, Xbox, even the Sidekick... and suddenly more people are using Zune software than all the iPod+iTunes users in the world.

I just hope since Microsoft isn't shy about making software for "the competition" (Seadragon on the iPhone?) they might be kind enough to make a Zune media player for Android one of these days....

I'm cool with it, as long as Zune doesn't die, new Zune hardware (designed by Microsoft) is still created, and the Zune continues to add more and more and expand across the world.

I just hope this means super tight integration. What has made the iPod win (aside from a bunch of cult worshiping fans) is that iTunes is the music app in OSX. Its what people where used to.

If Zune replaced WMP, that would push some people, because they would get used to using the software, and fall in love.

Oh, and we still need a Zune app for OSX.  That would help some as well.

Most of the people who are in the gadget/MCE/geek community have already heard that the Zune team has been split into separate hardware and software teams. I’ve read this story on several blogs...

I'm glad to hear something positive for Zune and at least some news regarding the Zune.  The player still sounds great and the menu features keep me on my couch controlling it with a remote (iPods can't do that).

The software needs some work and I hope that some of the things on our wishlish at zune.net get added in the next release.

I'd love to see a Canadian and European rollout.  Those who say that iPod is international should remember that it wasn't always that way and even their video selection paled in comparison to where it is now.  Zune is pretty much there now where iPod was 3-4 years ago and still trying to catch up.

I still think Zune needs to open up the software to other OS's such as Linux and OSX, not just the mobile Windows market, in order to compete.

I would like to hear "reading books" as a part of the total entertainment experience...so that means that I've always wanted that Zune is able to read pdf documents DIRECTLY, without a convertor which is unable to transalte accurately an entire pdf

It'd be great to work their now (though I need to re-hone development skills after years as a z/OS systems programmer)

Mentioned a design here once - a Zune-branded living room device / media player.. maybe this group will pull it through.  E-mail me if you want to discuss design :-)

So since you talk about "a single group focused on creating software and services that enable great entertainment experiences across the PC, TV, mobile phones and Zune devices." Will we see any intergartion of the Zune with Uverse TV services?

So, Feb 13 and that's it? The zune's dead or what?

I don't think that's a pretty good thing for canadian people.
