Not happy about this one, any idea how long? I just bought a slew of stuff for XMas for my son (external speakers, headphones...)

Any idea on how you may fix this? I mean how do you apply an update to a device that cant boot?

A little more information about the nature of the widespread issue would be helpful.  I have a device with a Zune logo screen locked up for hours.  Is this the issue?

My zune 30 works fine and its running firmware version 3.1

Hope on it... Mine is still working, but that is because I have not sync'd it to my computer (its on the Xbox 360 right now).

The issue they are talking about is the freeze the Zune 30 gb is experiancing. It is frozen with the loading screen on the front, and does not respond to anything but a dead battery.

My Zune 30GB bricked as well. I'm also have a blank screen problem with my 80GB! 2 of 2 is not good track record for something that should just work.  

Hopefully we can file this in the 24-hour bug category, and we will all be laughing about this tomorrow.

Both of mine are dead too...I let the battery die, then rechardged it, same issue still.  

I'm a member of the "My Zune 30 is a brick now club" oh and so is my wife.

I disconnected the battery to unfreeze the zune and then plugged it into the wall after reconnecting.  Everything is A-OK for now.  Thank GOD!  I'm using this for New Years tonight.

The sad thing is i did not sync mine to my comp and it is still not working

I have not connected my zune to my computer in 9 months and it still locked up this morning.  I guess it has nothing to do with new updates.  I have a ton of music on this thing that I do not want to losse.  How can you fix these if they cannot boot?  We will not be able to apply updates that may fix the problem.

My 30 bricked this morning...and it wasn't synched with the PC. My wifes 30 is ok, but is on v2.5 of the firmware.

Mine is also a brick, i dont have the tools to take it apart and pull the battery so i really hope you guys give us some indication of when you have a solution, a 4 hour flight Friday will really suck without it.

I never thought I'd consider an iPod until all three of my Zunes locked up at 3 a.m. this morning. This can't be good for market share. :(

Unpluging the battery worked on my two. Not for the faint of hart or someone with a warranty.

Mine is bricked too. It has been locked up with the Zune logo and a full progress bar all morning. I can't even reboot it. First problem I've ever had with it and all I did was hook it up to my PC last night to charge to battery. I'm very upset. I can't get through to phone support eiher. Also along with this problem the PC won't recognize that the Zune player is even connected to it.

Yeah; same here.  I trust Microsoft will rectify the situation with replacements or a fix.  The problem is I imagine the affected 30GB Zune are bricked and not just locked up.

Mine rebooted and froze sometime during the night while plugged into a USB port charging.  It wasn't syncing though.  The PC was off.

Its the clock, 2008 leap year 366 vs 365, last day of the year.  Microsoft just created Y2K problem with zune.

I'd still guess it's an issue with the GMT day, since it seemed tied to midnight PST.

My 30 gig worked great until this morning. Bad day to have it go since it was loaded with New Year's party music.

The "widespread" issue is the zune 30 not going past the zune boot screen.

THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. THERE IS NO VIABLE OPTION ON HOW TO EVEN APPLY AN UPDATE TO A DEVICE THAT WON'T EVEN BE RECOGNIZED BY THE COMPUTER. I HAD PLANNED TO USE MY ZUNE FOR MY NEW YEARS PARTY I'M HAVING TONIGHT INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BURN MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF CDS AND FOR THE AMOUNT OF MONEY SPENT ON SUCH AN EPIC FAIL THE BEST RESPONSE WE GET IS THIS. CLEARLY WE ARE GETTING SCREWED ON THIS ONE AND MICROSOFT AND THE ZUNE TEAM NEEDS TO COME UP WITH ONE H3LL OF AN EXCUSE ON THIS ONE.

I un-bricked mine my simply unplugging the battery and plugging it back in. Mind you that will void an Warranty you have, but a Zune 30GB should be outside of warranty now anyways.

Um, this is really OUTRAGEOUS.  I'm hoping there is some serious remuneration planned - I use my Zune every single day.  Except today!  

It'd be nice to know what was wrong, but that's almost impossible to know, since even Zunes that don't have the latest firmware froze too.

it would be nice to have more detail on the issue. we can only assume the 30s have become bricks, displaying the logo screen.

i'm sure they're working hard on the issue. hopefully they'll keep us updated periodically...

My zune 30gb is stuck on the logo screen.  I had an error just about a week ago that deleted all of my content.  I just now got most of it back.  My computer won't let me get the rest back, though.  My zune was fine yesterday.  I don't know what happened.  I looked it up, and one suggestion was that I should let the battery completely drain out, then plug it in to a power source.  I'm trying it now.  I hope it works.  I'm sure Microsoft will fix the problem.  We just have to be patient.  It's not the end of the world.  : )

I agree with Dave, how can you apply a patch or software fix to a unit that won't boot?

I am afraid if this is not fixed by tonight at midnight since my Zune is under warranty I'll be expecting a pre-paid FedEx package to return the brick to Redmond for repair.

Mine just unfroze also and the charging screen came up. I put it in my dock not connected to my PC and it shows a big icon that it's plugged in but now its frozen on that screen.

I'm really sad as well. I love my Zune and I love bashing on people with iClones. But its sorta hard to when I'm holding a brick.

My Zune 30 is also frozen dead.  It'd be nice if they replaced it with a Zune 80 to restore consumer confidence!

Add me to the club - 2 devices in my household are bricks.  They make a light humming sound and the unit was getting hot  - until the battery died ! Instead of the boot screen - I am stuck on charging icon now. I'll take an 80 GB replacement model !

OK. After about 10 min. of being stuck with the icon that showed that it was plugged up it looked like it tried to reboot but now is frozen with the Zune logo and the full progress bar again.

Just chill folks. The battery will eventually go dead (mine took 4 hours) so overheating isn't an issue. Let's have the tech team work on it and tell us what to do next.  I imagine it will start with a disk erase using the device itself:

My screen just went blank and the battery symbol appeared when I pressed the play button.  No humming.  Have it plugged into the wall charger with the battery & charger symbol.

In response to Carolyn, so far you can't use the disk erase or remove content commands or any other for that matter because the device is not responding to any button presses.

Any guidance on what to do if we haven't turned on a Zune/30 yet? One of mine is bricked, but the other hasn't been turned on in a few days. Do I just leave it off?

I'd suggest that everyone just take a deep breath and relax. Yes, it's a critical issue, but I am certain that the entire Zune team is at DEFCON 1 and working on the problem. Many of them may have to work on a holiday to deal with this.

Obviously, the reason they haven't released a lot of information yet is because everyone is busy troubleshooting the issue to come up with a fix. I wouldn't expect a full statement with some sort of explanation until tomorrow (New Year's Day). If there's a fix today, that'll be fantastic, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

My Zune is nonfuctional as well...I'm not really sweating it though b/c I really don't have an agenda for it at the moment other than listening to it in my car. I have CDs as backup though lol. I think the problem has to do with the date. My firmware is up-to-date and I haven't synced my Zune in about a week. Hey technology is not perfect or flawless, there is always going to be a problem to fix and always someone to fix the problem. So hopefully it will be dealt by tonight or before Dude's 4 hour flight. I just came back from out of town and my Zune made time fly.

I'm confident this issue will be resolved to my liking. It's kind of comforting to know that it's such a widespread problem, that is too big to ignore. I just hope it doesn't include spending a ridiculous amount of time Zuneless.

I guess I'm relieved that I'm not the only one with a bricked 30.  The consumer in me is upset that this would happen especially on New Years Eve (reminds me of the Xbox Live fiasco of last Christmas), but the geek in me is madly interested in how this happened and how MS intends to fix it.

It's a clock loop error.  There is no fix.  Well until Jan. 1st 2009 when the clock actually realizes that there was a leap day in 2008.  Unless of course the HD burns out trying to boot.  That's a whole other issue. Gotta love MS.  Who doesn't write a leap day into the code of a clock?  ^%&*^# idiots.

My suggestion: buy something from SanDisk. They make excellent mp3 players.

I unbricked it once by removing the battery ribbon cable, but it bricked again after a few minutes. Tried battery disconnect again and it bricked after a few minutes a second time. Now will wait for Official Guidance. Hope my 120GB at home is still working...

Mine got hit too. I hope they give us all refurbished zunes, like zune 80s.:) Or just new Zune 30s.

After my boyfriend told be ablouthis Zune's comma, I cheacked mine. i haven't connected it to my computer for a while (not since the first games update). its been working very slow for a while now. I'm very angry that every time I update my zune it went slower and slower! if there isn't some way this can be resolved I'm going to Apple

I have a 30 gb zune, and the same thing has occurred to mine. And I'm pretty sure mine's out of warranty. So for all of us that threw our money at Microsoft when it hit the shelves, we could be screwed. I'm willing to be patient, but seriously, perhaps Microsoft should straigten out all the kinks in their machinery before they sell it to the public.

Okay everyone, let's calm down. The Zune team says they are working on it, and until they identify what happened, they can't fix it. Give them some time, okay?

As for those of you screaming for money or bigger replacement models... why? What good is that going to do you right now? You would still have to wait for a check or device to arrive in the mail, and the issue would be fixed in the meantime. Just relax, okay? Stuff happens.

To the Zune team - Keep at it and let us know when the fix is available. And than you for acknowledging there was an issue so quickly. Apple would still be denying it next New Years Eve!

So, mine froze too. Tried letting the battery die and restart from there. It doesn't work, just starts up and freezes again on the logo page. Sadtimes all around. I'm up for a new Zune 80 to restore my faith in Microsoft. ; )

comon microsoft you can do it. i use this daily in my car so put your heads together and lets get it fixed. though i truly am in doubt about how e can fix it. hard to update the zune when its off ehh? then if it needs to be flashed we loose our media files..not to mention the time to send it off repaire and send it back. whats microsoft ready to do?

I thought my wife dropped it lastnight while it was plugged into my PC, she did, but I guess that didn't break it.  A friend called me with the news with the same problem.  I like the leap-year guess, I would put my money on it.  I remember hearing 08 was leap year but I would expect this to happen tomorrow?  Looks like they will have to go back for repair.  Try to enjoy your New Year!  BTW -This does suck, what a F***-up!

If all we have to worry/complain about is our Zune not booting in light of all that is happening around the globe and here in the USA, I'd have to say we are truly blessed. If you cannot live without your Zune you've got bigger issues than a hunk of plastic that will not boot. Cooler heads prevail, and I'm confident that this issue will be resolved. This is a minor inconvenience, not a tragedy.

Wow!  This happened to my son's 30 gb zune and to my husband's.  Based on everything I have researched, it seems that Microsoft programmer's forgot to test the 365 versus 366 days.  Hmmm... I am sure the programmer responsible will get a Happy New Year's "pink slip".  Tomorrow they will probably start working again...Happy Quiet New Year!

I just took mine apart and did the hard reboot by unhooking the battery. The Zune is working now, but I am not even going to attempt to hook up to computer until Microsoft has a fix.

30g bricked this morning. Stuck on the startup screen. It is always hooked up my computer every night since I use it at work every day.... needless to say, today is hard to work since I dont have my music or poscasts to listen to.

Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a fix very soon. I have had my zune since they came out and have only had one problem with it.... and a full reload worked just fine. That was over a year ago.

Add 3 30gb bricks. Just got them for the family. Mine bricked at 12:00am PST promptly. Now I feel stupid for passing the 8gb ipod nano on down, and showing off the wireless download service. LOL! :(

When I plug into my computer it is not recognized as being attached.  How can we even use a software patch if the computer does not recognize the Zune?  I say Microsoft should replace these 30GB with a 120GB free of charge for the inconvenience!

Another freeze here...a bit of advice for people though....don't take it apart and remove/replace the battery...be patient and wait for (a) midnight or (b) microsoft to help us out. I don't know how a patch would help though since the zunes won't respond to being synced...

Yea, well I'm Pissed too. I have one my daughter has one and my son, who is in Ecuador and they are all FROZENNNN!!!!

I think M.S. needs to at least appear to care about their customers and quit sending products and fixes and patches out to us before they are tested!!!! I'm tired of being one of their testers and having to pay for the opportunity.

My 2 year warenty just expired 5 days ago I think.  My is stuck on the zune logo screen as most are, I hope this problem gets worked out. I have heard talk that they will start working at midnight, but I don't know if that is true.

If you catch it at the right time, key combos work and you can do a wipe while it's loading.  But ummm... judging from my experience doing that so far, I wouldn't recommend it.  It's been "wiping" for about 20 mins now.

My 30 GB is in the same state, locked at the boot up screen. I am patiently waiting for Microsoft to correct this issue.  Would like it corrected prior to any New Years Eve events starting.

Hey guys, calm down now, I have a 30GB Device and it is working just fine. I'm running firmware version 2.3 though. They will figure out a way and plus who's to say they aren't going to start working again once we hit the new year?

I have never had any trouble with my 30gb zune until this morning.  It is stuck on the black screen with zune logo and will not respond.

I wonder if this has to do with this being Day 366? Perhaps there is a bug where no day can have more than 365 days?

Have 4 30GB Zune's in our house.  All 4 frozen as well.  Still wouldn't go back to iPod if given the chance. Not yet anyway.  Fingers crossed this is fixed quickly and painlessly.

It can't be a clock/leap year issue otherwise all Zune's would be effected because of the same OS.

A new 80 gb zune sounds like an excellent repayment for all the trouble all of us are going through.. and a quick fix I might add. No overtime pay for techs :)
