Since I joined Zune last year, the single biggest feature request from folks in the zune.net forums (besides the clock) has been for a new sync mode. A sync mode in which when you delete content from your computer, it still remains on your Zune device. People don’t like it when content magically disappears from their device, and rightly so. So, you asked for it, and we delivered; enter Manual Sync Mode…

While we believe there is great value in our Smart Sync modes, some folks want more control, and manual sync mode gives it to you. To enable manual sync mode, go to Settings, then click on Device, then navigate to Sync Options. Once there, check the box under the Manual Mode heading that states “I will add and remove music, videos, and pictures individually.”
Once you are in this manual sync mode, YOU are in control of syncing and deleting music, videos, and pictures to and from your device. Sync a huge video to your Zune 120, then delete it from your computer, and… it stays on the device! Same goes for music and pictures, if you sync it to your device, it stays on your device. By the way, getting content on your device still works the same way. You just drag and drop (or right-click and choose to sync) items to your device just as before.
And deleting from your device is easy too: just connect your device, and then click the device icon. This will take you to device view where you can view all of the content on your device. Once there, click on the music, video or picture headings; right-click the item you want to delete, and choose to “delete from <yourzunename>”. Voila, the item is deleted from your device.

You might have noticed that Podcasts, Friends, and Channels do not have a manual mode option. This is because those types of content updated dynamically by nature. Channels get refreshed, Friend’s user cards get updated, and Podcasts get listened to and need to be updated. You still want that new episode of the GamerCast Network Video Show updated on your device automatically, don’t ya?
As always, we’ll continue to review your feedback and comments and improve this new mode as time goes on, but my sincere hope is that we have addressed your main concerns. Try it out, let us know how you like it, and of course, how we could make it better.
Enjoy Zune 3.0!
