You asked for it, and we listened. Beginning next week when we roll out our new software, services and devices, your listening badges will be permanent. Plus, we've redesigned the icons, and I have to say, they're really cool!

When we first launched the badge concept, we decided they'd be earned based on a rolling 28-day cycle - which meant that if your listening habits changed, you'd lose some badges and earn others. The idea was that the badges could serve as a snapshot of your recent listening activity.

And while when we explained that to listeners, you understood, you also told us you'd prefer to see permanent statistics.

So next week, you'll see a big difference in the badges you have. All the old ones will disappear and be replaced with new ones (if you're eligible). Because the badges now stick around, we increased the playcounts you'll need to reach to earn them - now 200 plays for a Bronze Album Power Listener or Bronze Artist Power Listener, 1000 plays for a Silver Album or Artist Power Listener, and 5000 for Gold.

As for showcasing your current activity, we will still show your recent plays on the new site, in the software, and in your Zune card; we'll also note in your "recent activity" feed when you've earned a new badge so you can show off to all your friends.

Finally, we're re-introducing our Forums Contributor badge; we found in our 2.5 release that the post count and ratings were too hard to attain, so we made it easier, and we're introducing one new badge: Reviewer, for people who write great reviews of albums or helpful comments about artists. Let us know what you think, and what we should do next!

One feature I'd really like is related to the "My Most Played Artists" section of the social.

I don't use metadata retrieved via the Zune software (I have "automatically update album art and metadata" turned off, since I've been very meticulous about my tagging, art, etc.) As a result, though, none of the artists show up with artist photos in the social, and don't link to the artist pages.

Since the songs are showing up in my recent plays correctly, it's my understanding that they're at least being successfully correlated to a track in the AMG. Could this be used to connect the tracks I play into Zune artist data in the social?

Seeing the photos (and having the artists be clickable) in the social is a really cool feature, and I'd love it if it "just worked" for people in my situation. Thanks!

Hey, I really love the badges and this seems to be a very solid update. I had an idea, possibly a genre badge? So when you listened to a certain number of albums of a genre you got a badge for that genre. It would be cool to see the breakdown on users for what genres they listen to most. I have a question also, on the Zune social site is there any way to delete friends without taking them off Xbox Live? My Zune social account and my Xbox Live account are the same and on Zune social all my friends appear from Xbox Live but 99% of them don't have a Zune making my page look cluttered. Good work, I can't wait for the update!

Nice! It's like achievments kind of!

I'll second that about a sort of genre badge, basically in the effort to easily show users what kind of music you're most into.

@KZ - no, your plays aren't correlated to a track, actually - we just list what your metadata shows.

@Ryan W and Jander - Yeah, totally. We're looking at all kinds of additional badges to expand the system - send any suggestions you have my way!

Jessica: I don't want to belabor the topic, since it's not entirely related to your original post, but would it be possible for the Social site to simply assume that if I'm playing an artist named "Pearl Jam" that it's the same as the known artist "Pearl Jam", for instance, and thus link to the appropriate photo and artist detail page? (Or, possibly to have some sort of UI in the Zune software to manually or automatically correlate my artists to your artists without affecting track names, album art, etc?)

Genre badge is a great idea, I third it

I second KZ's question.  For example I have a bunch of stuff not recognized by Zune as music from an artist (like some live stuff, mixes).  So instead of counting toward the real artist, it counts towards an artist of the same name but no other Zune Social information (so by name only).

That's a lot of plays though.  After two years of the zune, I only have a little over 8,000.

Also, what constitutes as a play?  Just starting the song, or do you have to reach a certain point on the track?

@GregSoper: I once read (somewhere) that that track needs to play for at least 20 seconds to count as played. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'd love to see some sort of "omnivore" badge. 30/90/180 different artists in 30 days, or something to that effect.

I'd also laugh for quite a while if you made a "You're So Indie!" badge if more than X% of your plays are not recognized by the AMG / Zune metadata service

The genre badge is a neat idea, but one issue is people who go in (like myself) and change around the metadata and change genres around for stuff.

If using your Zune and not the marketplace where your collection rests I also heard it's 20 seconds...I have found thats not the case when playing a song from your collection using the Zune solftwr on your computer.

Since we are talking music, shouldn't there be a Platinum badge?

Yeah, It should've gone Platinum.

And then Diamond, Have you heard about a 10 million records sale?

Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!

Um. Forget it.

I liked the badges rolling on a 28 day basis.   I will also throw in my support for genre badge, you could vary the name of the badge up according to the genre

So, are the badges going to be retroactive for the plays you already have on an artist, or will they start fresh from the time the new update goes live?

I also like the idea of genre badges, or the Indie badge as someone suggested. Perhaps some way to represent people like myself who keep it on shuffle most of the time. I don't get quite as many badges for artist plays since it's always skipping around.

I like the genre idea, but I hate the way the music industry goes about classifying them. for example, on my 8gb zune I have 5 or 6 variations of alternative...none of which really make any sense. what is the difference between alternative and general alternative? I haven't edit my meta info either, it's done via the software. and 9 times out of ten it's wrong. the decemberist's are listed as alternative & Punk. there is nothing punk about them. so how accurate will a badge based on genre be?

@KZ - sure, it's possible, and we definitely have some ideas around how to do it - it's all a matter of prioritization. While it may not for you, we do know that the vast majority of the data uploaded does end up matching something in the catalog.

@everyone who wants a genre badge: tell me your thoughts on the genre data we have (go into Marketplace and look at the categories there - do you think they're right?)

@Ian - badges will be retroactive, using all the data we have about you. I'm pretty sure on day 1 I'm getting 52 of them, based on my play history! (Only one gold, though!)

And @Joe and Punataro - yeah, there's room for expansion. ;-)

Jessica

Not all Latinoamerican music should be labeled as "Latin" or "World"

Where is Salsa, Merengue, Bachata or Samba ?

These are definitely great "starter" achievements.

However, I want to see you guys expand these badges out into more "social" aspects. For example, perhaps have one for if you discover a lot of your music from your friends' Zune Cards or recommendations.

Perhaps have one for Podcast Addict.

Then perhaps another for how much varied music genres you listen to, or how varied artists you listen to? Something to encourage people to try new things.

I think that there should definitely be some badges which people will try to attain that will help change their music experience, similar to how achievements change peoples gaming behaviors on X360.

Jessica: Thanks for taking the time to respond. It really does speak well of you and the Zune team in general that you're so communicative. That said, my problem basically boils down to this: If I leave "automatically update..." unchecked, none of my music is associated with the artist art, etc. If I do check it, though, even on "only add missing information", it still happily changes my album art and release years in my collection. If "only add missing" did not change art and release years for tracks that are already tagged with art and years, then I could happily leave that on and enjoy the quite-impressive track matching without having to worry about changing my information back by hand.

Excellent, like I don't whore myself out for achievements on my 360 as it is...

Guess I'll have to continue doing what I have been: enjoying my Zune.

Great idea. Jessica, have you considered adding a possibility to flag songs or artists as not counted for plays? Let's face it, we all find songs on the Marketplace or Hypem or wherever that we *absolutely* have to listen to....for five days. Then erase and never mention you ever heard of the "artist". I am sure there are lots of indie and metal folks out there who otherwise will be shocked on Tuesday when they wake up and find a Power Artist Listener (Gold) JoJo tag next to their name. You know who you are...

Going for two: You could add a tab to flag an artist or song to count for Power Listener (B/S/G) "Dirty Little Secret". I think it is rude to out people as fans of Britney Spears just because they once got jiggy with the first minute of Pieces of Me ;).

I liked the look of the old badges better.  Too bad they just couldn't have made them permanent.  Will they fix the multiple artists issue with this update?

I'm with Ricardo on the genre labeling. But then again we don't want to get bombarded with genre labels. I mean there are so many of them out there!

i don't like the idea of a genre badge because of the afformentioned "too many genres" problem, there's really no way to stop that but i love the idea of an "omnivore" badge although i would find a different name, i really think that it would be a great way to further zune's strive to expose one to new music

errr can these be disabled? there may be a privacy problem- what if i don't want people knowing what I'm listening to?

The genres are great but, I find a lot of lesser known artists being put into funky genres they should not be in.  For instance, under electronic/dance, we have Katt Williams Live.  LOL.  Now, there is ONE feature I am dying for and have sent NUMEROUS emails about...the ability to upload and create customer playlists.  The more people who download your playlists perhaps the more visibility you get and plus, I want to make an 80s greatest hits playlist and have people rate and download it.

It would be great once the whole Live situation is completely universal.  Like if/when Windows Media Player/Center are one with the Zune Software, like Media Center is with Media Player.  Also including the Xbox 360 and media center extenders.  When you play a song on either device or program the plays are counted and it uploads to you Zune card.  Then as someone mention above how they have a lot of friends from Xbox Live who don't even have Zunes show up on their Zune card.  I'm sure those people listen to music, so if it were like that they wouldn't need a Zune.

I really like the whole badges deal! its a great way to see who I actually listen to the most!

I love the new updates! But it seems kinda laggy now and it hangs now(it doesn't before!) Just some bugs i guess. And what constitute a play? Somebody said 20sec into a song? Or is the same as the "squirting function" previously, first to a min or half the song?

I would love to go to my badges and click on one, Say Broze artist bagde for band X. then see other users who also have the bronze for band x. kind of a play on the mix view, but finds users only.

I really like the new feature where it keeps track of the play count of what you've been listening too.

Only bummer is it doesn't track what I've been playing on my actual Zune, only what's played in the software.

Is that going to be added later on?

What about a *Fan Badge*.  say over half of your recent played tracks are Linkin Park or 2 Doors Down for example.

Also, what about a *Collector badge*.  Download 20 things of Marketplace for example.

Finally, what about a *Socialist Badge*.  have say 25 friends or something.  Just a thought.

i also second, third, and fourth all of the badges mentioned earlier, genre badge and all.

Also, on the Zune itself, could we get some sort of counter for how many tracks Ive listened to on it?

And we NEED MORE GAMES!!!!!

There are so many old school arcade games that would work PERFECTLY with the Zune.

Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Galaga, Dig Dug, Brick, Poker, Minesweeper, Solitaire, and so many more!

Why is it just lame old Hexic and Texas Holdem?

The iPod had a clock, games and all of that way before you guys, time to play some catch up and get some decent games out there. I love my Zune, dont get me wrong, the new features are AMAZING! They kick the iPod all over the place.  But Im a gamer, even when I listen to music, i want to play someth9ing more then Hexic or Texas Hold Em.  Please dont make me carry my PSP around!!!!!!

I like the "permanent" badge idea..... It's seems as though they are not quite so permanent. I seem to have lost all but 1 of my Gold and several Silver seemed to have dropped off as well :(

i personaly think that the badges are a great idea.

I like the badges.. gives me something to look forward to..

a genre badge would be cool too..

another suggestion would be badges for high scores on games? or something along those lines..

I think you should make a section were people can post their homemade games giving more variety than hexic or texas hold'em

There needs to be a way you can check your play count on each artist/album...
