As you’ve seen, some Zune bits and pieces have been hitting the interwebs…especially the great finds from our fans! Today I’m very excited to admit announce the Zune 3.0 fall update, available for download September 16.

In short, we’re adding new enhancements to the entire Zune ecosystem that will undoubtedly continue to make it the best place to discover music whether on your PC or on the go.

Whether you’ve been with us since day one with a Zune 30 or are just heading to the store for a new blue Zune 8, you’ll be able to have all of the new features via a firmware update.

Core to everything we do is aimed at helping you discover and share music. We wouldn’t go as far as to consider ourselves “geniuses” at telling you what music you should check out, but we do think we’ve come up with some pretty good ways for you to expand your music library based on the type of music you and your friends listen to.

We are introducing Channels and Personal Picks. Think of Channels in terms of being a regularly updated playlist that you can subscribe to for free with a Zune Pass. We’ve got some of the best sources for music recommendations including the Billboard Top 100, The FADER Magazine, KEXP radio and more. Personal Picks is based on the music you listen to and how you rate your music. The Zune software will suggest artists, albums and tracks and custom Channels you might like, as well as connecting you to other listeners in the Zune Social.

There’s a reason we put in FM Radio and wireless capabilities in every device and Zune 3.0 delivers something that I am sure you’ll be impressed with, Buy from FM. Second to friends, terrestrial radio is a major way people find now music. 50% of Zune owners use FM radio on a regular basis. Now when you hear a song on a radio station that transmits with RDS or RT+ data feeds , you’ll be able to tag that song and purchase it.

Another feature that will take advantage of wireless capabilities is the ability to browse, stream, buy and download from Zune Marketplace on the device. When you are connected to a wireless network, you can check out the top hits, newest release or even search for your favorite artist with the new search function.

Realizing that sometimes folks want to take a break from music, we are bringing in support for Audiobook content from the industry leaders in the space as well as our first introduction of games on the Zune.

Now there’s a lot more details that will generate a lot of questions and I’ll do my best to keep you all up to date. For more go to the press release.

Finally, I’d like to say thanks to everyone who sent feedback in some way over the past months, whether in the comments on this site, the forums or elsewhere. A lot of these features you’ll see are in direct response to feedback we see, whether in formal research, forums, comments on this site. It isn’t easy lining up an update like this and while it might be another week until this goes live, we are sure it’ll be worth the wait!

Awesome! Thank all the Zune team for us.

Does it have a clock? I saw a video of it and I think i saw a clock on the top right of the screen. I'm not sure though so Caesar does it have a clock?

i want my zune!!!.

You will shio them to Chile ? ( South America )

Will this update enable the Zune Marketplace for Canadians?

The press release mentions hot spots and access but doesn't mention how/where users will be able to connect.  Can you share any further details?

Wow! Sounds like Zune will be getting some great new features. Look forward to the new update!

Amazing update! Can't wait for the mini-flash Zunes and the Zune Phone and Touch next year! ;) Haha just kidding. I know you guys like to be innovative and you guys have definitely shown that through this update. Keep up the inspiring work! (Apple must be tempted to copy right about now)

This is absolutely amazing, so glad to see you guys pushing forward AND showing love for us early-adopters.  I love nothing more than telling people about the new features we're getting and then laughing at them when they say "it's a shame you'll have to get a new Zune".  Keep up the good work and throw in Video Playlists one of these days!

Does it finally support unicode?

OMG, WOW.  I bought the zune 30 almost 2 years ago, I can't believe you keep adding functionality to it.

This is totally awesome.  I really like Zunes support for the older devices.  That's what makes a good company.  The new features are great!  I can't wait.

One other thing that would be cool is a web browser.  I know the zune is capable.

Just as I was about to post my Zune30 on Craigslist.   Hmm, now I may re-consider.

Please, please, please...  5-Star ratings back?

Awesome!  In one swoop Zune bests the channels feature of Slacker and the marketplace feature of iPod Touch.  All the while giving the existing customers new functionality for free... Thanks!!

I second that question about hot-spots.  How will it work without a browser?

It gives me a list of songs I might like based on my ratings!!!  Everything I wanted and more.  Thank you, thank you, thank you... (etc ;)

Caesar, I thought of one thing you could share with the zune team that would make the whole music experience even greater.  Streaming music from Pandora.com.  It is the best way to listen to similar artists that you like and learn of what music to buy.  They just put out an app for the itouch and iphone... so the zune could handle the streaming.  This would be awesome.  Then you could link it to the market place so you can instantly buy the song that you like.

KUDOS, Zune team!! This sounds like a wonderful update! It's funny to hear the apple fanboys on other sites commenting that this update is useless. It just shows how brainwashed some of these sheep are.

thank you zune team! You guys and gals rock.

OK, here's what gets me the most excited about this update: ALL of these features are features that have been clamored for on the Zune.net forums, so it underlines once again that you guys are listening to us!

I’ve heard on some blogs that you can download from the “cloud” using the Zune. Does this mean you can delete a video directly from your zune to make way for another video you wish to download from your host computer using a wifi hotspot? That would be so cool if you could do that!

Imagine going on a trip and then you wish to see the latest episode of Lost which was recorded onto your Media Center PC at home while you were away on the trip. Then you use your zune to connect to your home PC miles away in order to download the latest episode. Will the new software/firmware allow you to do this?

Sweet It felt like it was just yesterday that you sent a new update. What about Xbox 360 to Zune compatibility anything planned there?

i'm really proud of having a zune device. its great to still have my black zune30 and get updates and being able to use the same features that zune4, zune80 and now zune120 can use.

keep on working zune team!

Sweet new update you guys doing anything with the 360 and Zune?

Wowwww Weeeee!!

I love my Zune 80

more and more every half year.

hehe

Can we tag an MP3 file as an audiobook using the Zune software? Let's say I buy a audio book CD and I rip the CD, can I tag that resulting ripped MP3 file as an audiobook?

Quite simply:  this update sounds awesome.  Enabling this feature for the original Zune 30 is a classy move on the Zune team's part.  Getting the input system in place for searching and configuring wireless opens up interesting possibilities down the road (on-the-go playlists?).  And yes, the fact that many of these features have been requested- and responded to by the Zune team- exemplifies why this platform is the one to beat.

Can't wait for the 16th.

Got to love your product strategy:  No Zune's left behind!    Keep hearing about Zune and the cloud.  How 'bout Zune as a device on Live Mesh?  Ausgezeitnet!

Marketplace browsing within the zune! nice addition to my trusty old 30gb!

With Zune, I love being an early adopter! Thanks for the new features, and I'm so buying a new blue flash companion for my Zune 30.

Keep Up the Awesome work Cesar! I can't wait for the update

Thank you so much!

@ Jaxim:

That would be awesome! I wonder if Live Mesh will integrate the Zune as well to allow us to do similar things with our media library on the go

Please tell me you have that UNICODE thing in this new coming firmware. I've been waiting , waiting and waiting...

@Rockman87

The update will do what Pandora does. You're getting that functionality.

I really like this update so far. The new now playing looks great, but I keep asking where is my USE AS EXTERNAL HDD FEATURE update. I am a Zune 30 user waiting for this single update to buy the 80 or now the 120. And please add optional 5 star rating you can use both as songs with 3 or more stars are considered Like. Give me options. Instant Search back from WMP 11. Nice work guys.

concerning audiobooks: i hope you mean Audible when you say "the industry leaders"... i can't WAIT to not have to strip the drm every....single...time!

Hopefully this will fix some big sync issues I've had since 2.0 like not being able to sync my video and Vodcasts. It's been a pain that noone's been able to solve.

Anyways, here's to new features.

Great job.  UK.  Market.  Next. Please.

thank you!

Hey Cesar,

Wow it's been forever since I've been to your site. I remember it like it was yesterday that we were just getting the v2 software and hardware and the meetup at Fuel in Seattle (speaking of which, any plans for another seattle meetup? Perhaps in actual redmond? :)

My question is, is there going to be a Red 120GB model going forward? I believe there is an 80GB model right now, and just wondering if the red will be kept around, or if I should tell my friend to buy it while she can!

Kudos!....it's really great to still be able to update my Zune 30 Can't wait...I hope this time the forums aren't flooded with complaints.

I can honestly say, the fact that Zune30's are getting all the features is making me recommend the Zune player to people more. Updating the older players is something I have not seen another company do, and when I need or want another MP3 player, it will be another Zune if this keeps happening.

Excellent job Zune team! I may not go all over the place, but that's because I haven't had any problems. In addition, if something really good and/or unexpected happens, I send praise where it's due.

All I want form the team is for them to keep up the good work!

Obviously you try to get as much functionality as possible into the Zunes, and keep them (software wise) equal.

Can we get rid of the Microsoft Point system and use real local currencies which would also allow for the $0.99 purchases without buying $5 packages of points?

Have the shackles come off for non US / Canadian Zunesters? Even without being able to purchase stuff, access to the social is even more important to get the most from your Zune.

If the Zune 3.0 does support unicode, then I'm all set to be a first time owner of Zune. I've had all the iPods, just want to try something new. Congrats to the Zune team, keep up the good works.

No DivX support? :(

my zune is arriving from the US with my friend this Saturday :) can't wait!

thank you Zune team for the effort!

London UK calling!!! WHERE IS MY ZUNE???

You have matured enough so please let us have it at a very competitive price, with a great engaging clear ad campaign.

The fact that you are still supporting the 30 GB Zune shows that you guys really do care about the customers.  (Unlike Apple, who just says "Buy a new iPod.")

I want Ogg support and mass storage. That's it.

Looks awesome! Can't wait.

But will we ever get asian text support?

thank you guys so much for innovating new features. I would really like to see some kind of touch device, but the expanded memory and amazing software are really cool. Plus the fact that you keep all dunes in the update mix is beyond great!

This is a long time coming.

The update sounds fantastic guys! Believe it or not one of the features I'm most looking forward to is the new Albums view in the software.

I do have a couple of questions:

Is there Unicode/Asian text support?

Is there a Taskbar Control Panel or Minimize to Tray option yet?

And finally are there any new codecs? Is it that hard to support gif images?

I've read elsewhere that if the network requires a browser to log in, it won't work, but if the network doesn't, you'll be able to enter security details.

Does it do bookmarking? Will it have EQ?

Any word on the bug that causes the Zune software to take up 4 GB of RAM when monitoring a Windows Home Server PP1 volume? Is that fixed in the 3.0 Desktop software?

Podcast sync support for WiFi hotspots? (meaning I dont have to be at my house, with the computer to pull down my latest podcasts?)

Great work ZUNE team!

Thanks Zune team! I love how every Zune gets updated for free.

Any chance for the flash Zunes to get a bigger screen so it has a smaller black border around the screen? Zune is a great product but I can't recommend the flash zune full heartedly over the iPod Nano since the nano screens are bigger.

Let's hope beyond features, the Zune team has fixed existing functionality in the 3.0 release.

For example, gapless support was broken in 2.5 (especially for LAME MP3).  How about the broken 'find album info' feature that numberous, but not all, have connect issues with?  Or the 80/30 hard drive that constantly spins up while playing long tracks (>20 minutes), eating your whole battery?

Crossing fingers...

Great! Put the most important update (not mine) that everyone is clamoring for... The Clock?

Just wanted to say thank you for continuing to update the 1st and 2nd Gen Zunes with the new firmware, You guys are awesome and I love my Zune 80, and from what it sounds like, It will be like a new zune soon!!

Does this mean my Zune won't have to reboot every time I stop playing a game now?

And that I won't have to deploy from within XNA?

Great Shtuff guise!  Love it, can't wait...who's doin' a Zune sleep over the 15th??

Hands down these updates trump the apple "Let's Rock" event today.  Why don't you guys do a few more big-splash events that really get people talking?

@Jander - Yes but you must have a zune pass to stream the songs.  Pandora is all paid for like a local radio station... so you wouldn't need a zune pass for streaming from pandora.com

@Gordigor- There is a clock in the 3.0 update... It is in the top right hand corner!

Very unfair that 120GB is already available at Fry's and the rest of us have to wait.  There's no Fry's in South Florida!

Well after seening what Apple had in mind, you guys are doing a great job, expand globally, put the Zune in the mesh, xBox, HD Content and Fiji support and you be setting in a great place.

Fantastic News...You guys rock..now 16th seems so far away...why don't you guys release new stuff on fridays so that we have 2 days on the weekend to play with !!...

Very nice feature set...it's almost 6 months with my Zune 80 and this is the third upgrade I got...Luve Zune

"We wouldn’t go as far as to consider ourselves “geniuses”..."

You made my day. Zune team, kudos, and you've got me for life. Well done.

Come on, Zune Team

2009 and still riding the QVGA screen resolution.

Everything else is OK. Not great or groundbreaking.

Is it me, or was there a lot in Itunes 8 that the Zune team have got covered, plus some..

Oh please, let us have the marketplace in Canada soon.... the new features sound great but it sounds like us Canadians aren't getting some of them because they're not so rlevant/useful without the Marketplace (and a Zune Pass)..... Please please please bring us the Marketplace soooooon!

The Zune team clearly trumped Apple's announcement's this year.  I sense a turning point here...

I for one, I'm only looking forward to the software.  Being in Mexico every other thing is almost useless.  Sigh, come on guys, I understand that setting up a local mktplace is not easy, but at least support the product in NOAM and other large markets.  Heck, the fruit company has been selling their PMP in Mexico for years and there is no dedicated marketplace for the region.

Great job with the new features and it's also great to know that they're around the corner.

Looking forward to trying out the new features and discovering any other little trinkets not mentioned.

yes about the clock is it tru

"We wouldn’t go as far as to consider ourselves “geniuses” at telling you what music you should check out..."

Hehe... you know, I think the automated recommendation system has merit, BUT I also think the social aspect of the Zune is a huge plus. The key, of course, is getting enough people to buy them that you have a sort of critical mass....

Anyway, great work! I'm looking forward to updating my trusty old Zune 30, which is still performing beautifully. And when it comes time to upgrade to a newer model, I'll know that the Zune team isn't going to leave me in the dust.

You rock.

Wow, nice work guys. The new price and features work for me!

Did anyone notice how the new iPods have to be turned side-ways to watch video? Now where did I see a PMP do that??......

Hahaha! I love the jab at Apple: "We wouldn’t go as far as to consider ourselves “geniuses” at telling you what music you should check out..."

Yes, we had some big news this week . Hope everyone's excited! While you're checking out all

I bought a brown Zune the very day it came out and I am still loving it. It's so awesome to see a company giving more and more functionality to existing customers devices.  It makes it so I am not forced to by the latest version like with some other mp3 players I can think of.  And I think it really makes loyal customers.  I'm fine with my old Zune for now but when it comes time to get a new mp3 player I will definitely be buying another Zune.  Thanks guys.

i hope this update doesn't brick my zune like the last one did. :(

Great Job and Update! I still want a touch zune though!

Yeah, That's Fine , but the only thing they need to put is a internet browser !

cant wait!!

Zune, Thanks I will be with you for a long time

Genius? Here is what I call Genius. By Microsoft announcing the day they did (as well as having those accidental leaks – wink wink) they just assured themselves of being mentioned in every article and/or news item in every paper and news source in the world. Every article I read, regardless of their point of view, they all mention the Zune as an alternative. Now that is Genius!! I am looking forward to the update on the 16th and I will be one getting a blue 16gb. Great work guys!!

dude i think this is great. BUT. we asked for this stuff 2 years ago... all of it. i was a faithful zune insider reader... the posts started slowing after 2.0... then my 30 effed up and i bought a sansa fuze (couldn't be happier battery life is phenomenal) but i like where youre going with this... its too late though in my opinion you're only starting to catch up not innovate... saving grace... buying and transferring music from the 360... zune mp on 360 is go... you will sell SO MANY ZUNES IF YOU ADVERTISE THAT MESS!!!!!!!!!!!! really?? ipods cant do that and a gang of heads own 360s... and 360s at 199??? dude its done yall need to do that... its innovative and actually revolutionary...i hate apple and ms... but ms would win brownie points on anything related to 360... its simple logic that im absolutely sure youre working on right? if not hire me.... burnout20@yahoo.com cmon buddies i know you can but y0ur success is lying in wait... its in the xbox... j. allard should know that... work harder.... do it please evry1 with an xbox will sell their ipods... and believe me most with the boxen have ipods not zunes... integrate.

I like your subtle jab at iTunes, Cesar ;) (and since this post came out the night before iTunes 8, you might not have even known it was a jab! (hint: Genius))

I can't wait for the 16th, my Zune 30 has been getting a lot more use since 2.5, and 3.0 has a lot of great features, especially for Zune Passers like myself.

Awesome Cesar and team.  I've played around with the XNA game sdk and am very impressed with the beta games out there.  I can't wait to see what the final versions look like.  Keep the goods coming! Thank you for not only giving us free upgrades, but  creating a device set that won't be "outdated" anytime soon.

My 30 is still in the game!! Yes!

Please pass along to the Zune team....Great update.

Would please add the Asian Fonts support in this fall update? I am still waiting for the Asian fonts feature~

Yesterday, the Zune Team announced their Zune 3.0 release was hitting next week on September 16th. As

Thanks for the audiobooks update. I'm probably in the minority, but I use my Zune 80 for mostly for podcasts (95%) not so much music (5%). I'll have to check out some audiobooks now.

Does anyone have any word on wether you can edit and organize video metadata?

Thanks for the great updates to the software and product!

-Lil'

@ Lilsalmon: Wasn't that added in the 2.5 release?

I still am waiting for "Save Quick list."  It seems like the most obvious.

Will the Zune 3.0 software support Vista x64??

Long live the 30, i realize your sales team would probably want to force us to buy a new device to get new features, but you guys are proving to not be M$. this is great. Thanks!

How about launching the Zune in the UK? Or at least let us UK users join the social!

International Zune owner here, more specifically a UK Zune owner.

Its tough when we can't even access the free podcast section. Its been 2 years now since you guys released in the US and I've had a Zune 8 and now a Zune 80 for the last 2 months or so. I adore the device, I really do... But please, please let us at least use the social and podcast marketplace outside of the US otherwise 95% of the new features are utterly pointless :-/.

Hey KOF, can you change the country on the Zune, or in the software? If so, can you set it to US? Try it, see if it lets you access the content then.

I'm still rocking a zune 30 and as soon as my zunepass fills it I'm buying a new zune.

Do we finally have a clock in the main menu?!

Yes there is a clock, it is not listed in the features but it's there.

awesome....I can hardly wait...love my z. IBGEDE!

when you figure out that there are other continents in the world let me know until then off to buy a new iPod classic from Apple online.I would seriously consider a Zune(itunes on windows is a PITA) but when its not available thru normal channels in your country its another Apple sale.

um... i like zunes. so ha.

I have not read about supporting the "tv pack" for vista media Center, will zune recognize the ".wtv" format?

LOVE my 30 Gb Zune but still HATE the software; Never works. Too user-UNFRIENDLY so I cannot recommend the Zune.

No need for 5 star ratings - they just waste tine

Keep up the great work Bill and Co, Great interface, great skins and supporting illustrators and artists etc - the Zune really is about all media..

But please please give us a customizable podcast playlist so we can listen to the last 10, 20, 30 etc podcasts downloaded.

I love my 8gb Zune!

Next step: Bring the MarketPlace to Canada (ZunePass)!

"Hey KOF, can you change the country on the Zune, or in the software? If so, can you set it to US? Try it, see if it lets you access the content then"

You can change your region so that you can see the Zune marketplace, but you can't sign in... So you can't download anything.

Will the Zune have unicode so it it can finally support Asian fonts? It makes me mad that I own the best mp3 player *Zune* and yet all of my music titles are blocks. Even my 1 GB Samsung can do it and it was only $30 yet my $250 Zune can't!

Ceasar, I just watched the podcast episode 4, and I just wanted to let you know that I put chips on my sandwiches too!  It really does add a lot to the sandwich.  keep up the good work.

I would like the ability to edit and save quicklist. I like the radio and other enhancements! Time to add Silverlight2/WPF support for dev's like me via dev.live.com and such. I hear you M$, u hear me?

Does it support Unicode??

MSN for zune at any point?

Well dun on this one though Zune Team! - especially for including the Zune 30 in all of this.

Can Zune correctly display Asian characters yet?

Lance, others - that's not in this release, but it's definitely something the team is looking into.

Awesome, this is great! I can't wait! Only two more days left!

I would love to see a clock!

Id also love to see password protection on my zune.

We Zune users need our PRIVACY

:)

Do u kno when Zune will put an internet brower on its device becuase i would love that

@ ACE -- Zune SLeepover ! AIm=golephish

counting down. hopw the damn thing finmally has a clock!

Heads up, dear blog reader - tonight at 9:00 PM PT, Zune Marketplace, Zune.net and Zune Social will be

Please, Please let their by Audible support.  I might actually get to bring my Zune on the next road trip.  It's hard to justify bringing two players on a trip, so the one with audible support always wins out.  With audible support the rest of the family would be ready to give up their silly little iPods.

i love my zune 30. i have been having problems with syncing so hopefully this update will fix that. i was an early adopter and i LOVE IT. THANKS ZUNE TEAM! you make all my wildest dreams come true... time to stay up all night waiting for it!

I would like to see zune move in a direction more like COWON America's Q5W see- www.cowonamerica.com/.../q5w  and other players that can play tons of formats, and browse the web.

Well, I tried using the radio after the 3.0 update and it bricked my Zune.  It won't turn on/off or anything.  I thought it just froze at first, but it's been a couple hours now -_-

i love zune. ever since i got one i've enjoyed every minute of it.

i have one q tho.

i looked around in the marketplace but i dont see games so where do we get them from??

hi, Zune team staff. it is a good news and I just updated the Zune software. But i am still so desponded that the Zune Team has not develop the Asian language pack for Zune. How come? I love the 30G Zone i got but I can not read the Asian song's title, it really makes me to consider if I should keep it or get another mp4 player from another brands. please let me stay with you guys ! could you reply an e.mail to me ( Jared1155@yahoo.com )

Thank you and have a nice day!!

                        Jared

still no unicode/asian text support? wow. seriously, what is the reason this hasn't been added yet? as it stands, my zune sits around mostly unused and this is a major enough issue that i won't recommend the zune to friends/family.

please add unicode/asian text support!

I also tried to use the radio with 3.0 and my Zune won't turn on now.

Guys, come on. I'm loving the clock, but I've had this Zune for over a year now, and I'm kinda tired of seeing blocks where I should be seeing Asian fonts and symbols like stars. Unicode support has been pretty much make-or-break with my friends' decisions on whether to go with iPod or Zune, and this has gone on long enough. Please include this soon.

Thank you so much Zune Team!!! You never forgot your first Zune 30 owners, which I am one from the VERY beginning. I got my Zune a few days after it came out and have loved it from day 1. You give me the same stuff as all the other Zunes and thats why I will never ever in my life look at an Ipod. Thanks for giving me a player and atmosphere that is different from the norm. I'm loving my Zune 30 more every day. Great job!

I read some of the posts and I think it is a great place! I really like your attentions

Please Please add the asian unicode support soon. otherwise i'll have to get an ipod =(

I have the Zune 120 and I love it!  but so far everyone I have talked to have said the same thing, I wish I could use it as an external HDD.  When will this support come?  I know they're registry hacks, cracks etc out there, but none of them are working for me.  I was very disappointed when I found out that it cant be used as a external HDD, the ipod can easily.  anyways hopefully this support for this will be out soon and make an up and coming MP3 player into the ultimate MP3 player.

scoot@firehall.com

I would like to try the ZUNE 120 but I can't find a store in the Philippines which sells it. If I'd do it online it's only available for U.S.A... Need help on where I can buy it. -thanks

You really need to add other languages for the tracks, those white boxes are really tiring and it's not difficult to do. Even acknowledging that you don't intend to listen to us would be helpful so I could have your blessing to look into a different mp3 player.

Ok... I have a Zune 30 GB and I would really appreciate it if you guys would add asian characters. I only listen to Japanese music and well... It gets tiring seeing nothing but boxes. PLEASE PLEASE install asian fonts.

Otherwise I have a feeling I'll probably get another music player. =/

Love the zune but were are the games there is only 5 also 120gb and no way to use it as extra storage I used my ipod all the time to transfer large files to my laptop from my pc.The software is amazing so easy to use need to advertise the hell out of it, this would be out selling the ipods but no one knows about them they just became available in canada. For the future would be nice to see a 32gb flash version of the 120gb you could make it thinner and with a higher res screen 720x480 is what I would like I don;t really need 120gb but 16gb is to small.

i just got a zune 120GB as a gift because my friends think my iRiver 40GB is so out of date.(they call it iBrick) and now i just found out the zune doesn't even support asian language. even my old iBrick supports it when i bought it 5 years ago. what is wrong with Microsoft? i can't believe this.
