Howdy!

My name is Matt and I work on the Zune client (software) team as an SDET. I have been working full-time at Microsoft for just over a year now and love working for the Zune team! Before that, I did contract work for Microsoft on products like Windows Media Player 11, and Expression Media Encoder. Needless to say I am a media fanatic and love working on media related projects. Cesar also recruited me to bring a different perspective to Zune Insider and bring more transparency to our processes, ideals, and implementation strategies.

As an SDET (Software Development Engineer in Test), I am responsible for the planning and execution of testing for particular feature sets in the Zune software. Essentially, I get to break the software, find bugs, and work with our developers to fix issues before the product gets in your hands.  Most of my friends say that all I do all day at work is listen to music, watch videos, play with gadgets, and break software. The great thing is, I really can't argue with that!

I'll be doing a few different things while blogging for Zune Insider. For one, I'll be here to give you the inside scoop on how features came to be the way they are, and our reasoning behind the functionality of the features. I'll also blog on tips and tricks with the Zune software, bringing features and usage scenarios to your attention that you may not even know existed. More than anything, I want to give you another connection to the Zune team. I have never owned a product in which the people that actually helped create it are in public forums reaching out to users to help them, listen to them, and drive the direction of the product based on their ideas and suggestions. To me, that is one of the most exciting aspects of Zune, and I feel it really differentiates us from the norm.

Some of you may already know me from the Zune.net community assistance forums (Zune Tag: skipdeez) where I moderate the Sync, Send and Wireless help forum. I'm in there quite often helping users, so if you need any help with a specific issue, just drop me a line!

Oh, and by the way, please add me as a friend so that I can beat Jessica in the race to the most friends. :) I love all type's of music as you'll see from my Zune card, so by adding me, not only will you be helping me gain more pseudo-status within the Zune team,  you'll also get to see all the sweet tunes I'm playing. As I type this I am listening to Radiohead, but I have to admit that Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" has been resonating out of my office since it came out.

Looking forward to connecting with you all, cheers!

nice! welcome matt!

Great to see you blogging, Matt.  We miss you on the Expression Encoder team :-)

You might want to make a minimize to tray option.

Also the option to not include specific tracks in shuffle.

Nice to hear from you Matt.

btw, did you notice the bug in Zune Software when syncing music to the Zune. you'll notice that the sync progress display is never the same (3% in Zune software and 2% on Zune and so on, its always 1 less on zune than Zune software)

I really love the connection with the customer, it's an undeniable edge you have on that fruit company.

Hi Matt! Welcome! Looks like we have the same job, just that I work for a different company (don't worry, it's not a competitor! LOL!)  Isn't breaking the software fun?

Like Sri, I also have a 1% difference in the sync of my Zune, but only if connected with the cable. If I sync it wirelessly, then it's off by at least 10%. And the Zune software will say that it's done, but the Zune itself goes on for like another 2-5 minutes before finishing.

Speaking of wireless sync, I LOVE IT! It is quite possibly the best feature in the Zune.

You worked on WMP 11? Let me say that team did an awesome job with the UI. I love the way WMP 11 is designed, specifically the layout of the player controls. And the other bits of the UI, and the dynamic search built-in. The beveled black and blue lit-up buttons is a really nice touch.

I also love the way it plays right from the taskbar. Ingenious idea.

I just wished you guys could have added podcasts, a lot more codecs by default (people will download alternatives or codecs anyways), and let it work with the Zune device. Even if it's not PFS, you could bend the rules, right? I just wish WMP 11 could get updates, than just security fixes. Sigh. Nice work.

Hopefully one day maybe, you guys could combine the best of WMP and the Zune software, so I don't need two separate applications on my computer. Keep up the good work.

@Sri

idk

but that may not be a bug. The computer could be tracking how much it has sent and the zune might be tracking how much it has received and sorted.

Right on, nice to see some tag-teaming.

Hey Matt! You worked on WMP 11? I love the toolbar option it has. Any chance of that coming so the Zune anytime soon?

The zune itself maybe a good player but its software is horrible. I already accepted that there will be no drag and drop in the near future, like I had with my previous player as an usb mass storage. But proper use of the zune software is nearly impossible. Plainly said, it's the slowest peace of not beta or alpha software I ever saw. It takes ages to arrange and modify your collection, it doesn't recognize tags properly and the whole syncing process is a farce. You have so little control about what gets synced and the overall process takes alot more time than it should.

I don't think all these speed issues are related to my comp, cause it's way over the top to run some music collection manager.

Sorry for the hard words but you still have a long way to go before you can call the zune software good or even satisfying.

i think its awesome we are getting to know more about the zune team as a whole. soo hey matt whens that mac client coming *wink* i hope you guys open up to mac because my pc died and all i have is my macbook right now. either way i cant wait to see what you guys develop and what i learn about the zune software that i prob dont know already!

Welcome! Looking forward to seeing what tip you have to share with us!

Welcome buddy; we Zuners will help you with features and hurt you with questions ;)

Thanks for reaching out to those who use the Zune. I look forward to interacting with your posts Matt.

Hi Matt,

I am looking forward to the tips!

Check out lifehacker - yesterday or so they had a question about favourite media players and Zune came up frequently in the list. Show the team and tell them to take a bow.

Hi Matt, I'm looking forward to learning some of the history behind how certain things/features came about and definitely some of the untapped usage scenarios you all had visioned.

#1. The Zune rocks.I love the screen and especially the wireless sync.

#2. I think the Zune should allow the option to give access to the storage to copy files, data, music...etc. Same as what the iPOD and Creative devices give you.

Also when the Zune is docked, it should show up in the My Computer in the Devices section. So that if the option to see the data section was available, it could be interacted with.

#3. It would also be nice to have the option from the Zune software to link in to Podcasts that aren't shown by Zune. There are a lot of Podcasts in iTunes that would be nice to tap into. I don't know if this can be done now or not, but it's something to definitely consider.

#4. More codecs. I have movies on my laptop that I can't convert (not without a lot of troubles) to the Zune. It should be transparent. I should have the ability to convert any WMV, MP4*, etc to the Zune. I shouldn't need to get another piece of software.

#5. When is version 3 coming :) and what's included? Can any details be told at this time? I think it would be good if the Zune users knew of what's coming and more importantly when, like on a scheduled release. Every 3-6 months we would do an update or something.

#6. For heavens sake...get me the Marketplace in Canada!!! I don't know what the issue is and why iTunes is here and Marketplace isn't.

#7. Get the Zune out to other Countries!!!

#8. Keep up the good work. I like what I'm seeing coming with Zune Games. I think it would be nice if the Zune had a date/time on the player (shown in corner at all time) and some basic date/calendar functionality. Nothing like a PIM, but to show you date and be able to browse...sometimes you need a calendar handy on the GO.

#9. Voice recorder (v3 zunes). I had a Creative Zen Vision M, and this was a wonderful feature. I don't think it would cost all that much to integrate into the Zune...it would just make it that much better.

#10. Touch...I know its been talked about...but get Touch in ASAP before the iTouch kills you.

#11. Fix the playlists that were broken from WMP.

#12. I love the rating system (heart, broken, none)...totally makes sense. 5 stars was overkill. Most of the time you put in 3, 4, 5 or 0. You either love a song or like it...and the ones you dont like...dont sync (broken heart).

#13. Zune Software...sorting, arranging, etc of the music. Right now it's too limiting. I like the thumbnails, but a detailed grid option would be nice.

I could keep going all day long. I'm a fellow software developer engineer and I see so much potential in the Zune and would like to see it get there.

I hope my comments and suggestions help.

Thanks

Callon

Forgot one more...

#14. Add DJ playlists...have the Zune play your favorites, top songs of the day, month, random, etc. The Creative Zen Vision M had this too...awesome feature.

Thanks

Callon
