Hey there!

Cesar has recruited me to give you the developer's perspective here on Zune Insider. I'm a program manager on the Zune Social team, and I also spend a good amount of time in the forums, getting users' perspectives on features we have already developed and what you'd like to see in the future.

So what's a program manager? Basically, my job is to figure out the details of what the development team is going to build. Program managers have a foot in two worlds: we have to understand both the needs of our business, and the technology we'll use to build features. Pretty much it's the best job around here. :-)

I'll be hanging out and blogging about a couple of things. I'll talk about how features that already exist came to be, in an attempt to give you some more transparency around our process. I'd also like to have conversations with you around feature areas I'm thinking about - I won't be able to tell you what exactly we're doing and when, but I will talk about how I see various aspects of Zune Social and engage you in those discussions.

Feel free to add me as friend, by the way - I listen primarily to electronic music and look for new stuff (well, new to me) every week. Plus you'll get the added bonus of being able to see every time I post in the forums - woo hoo!

Welcome, Jessica!

hola!

Glad UR here Jessica

nice to hear from you. are ya'll developing a way to listen to audiobooks on the zune? creative had a feature called bookmarking so you could bookmark where you were when you were listening to a track.

I remember Jessica from her time on the Media Center team.  She was a great voice for Media Center over at the Green Button forums and I look forward to having her as part of the Zune conversation.

Welcome back on the scene Jess!

Great to have you here and I am really jelous of yr job.

Nice to see ya getting the transparency on (albeit limited) for the community. I like chit chatting with you folks who I hear are "in the know".

(PS Grandmaster Secret Keeper)

Seriously though, lookin' forward to your posts Jessica!

Transperancy - Awsome.

Please please please add Unicode support!

effin' sweet...we need more chics in this sausage fest...

:-P

"I also spend a good amount of time in the forums"

There's an understatement :)

Good to see you here Jessica

Thanks for comming and telling us about the process. I'm sure another company *cough* apple *cough* would never do this.

Sweet! Thanks for the openess Cesar!

Hi Jessica, looking forward to your blog posts!

Hi Jessica! I'll be excited to hear about how features come to be. (and as far as feature requests, all I really want is the ability for the Zune software to play music off the Zune, so that I can spare my laptop's puny hard drive)

cool, a lot of us were asking for something like this for a long time. In the new features realm, how about being able to see your own zune card on the zune device? I think it's a little strange that I can look at all my friends' cards but not my own. Oh, and I know it's already coming but can't wait for full game support(i.e. without restarting the zune after every game, without all the bugs and such). Welcome to zuneinsider :D

Nice to meet yuouyou Jessica. Looking forward to more transparency around here.

and where is the dude that did podcasts ???

where is him ?

I had actually added you as a friend earlier, though I've forgotten how I originally found your 'tag. I'd just like to say a huge thank you(!) for the work you do, and for being a beacon of electronica hope in the Zune scene. It's such an under-appreciated genre in the US (though I'd imagine it's more prevalent on the coast), so I'm tremendously grateful for the ability to track your played tracks and add them to my collection via the Pass. I've already discovered dozens of new tracks (along with a handful of new and forgotten artists) thanks to you, and it's wonderful to finally find someone with similar taste in music. I have pretty strict taste in music, so when I found so many of my favorite artists in your plays list, I was pretty shocked. Just the fact that you know who BT is tells me that you're one to watch.

Thanks again for your part in creating the Zune franchise, and offering your Zune tag for all to benefit. Keep up the fantastic work! :)

Hi Jessica,

Is there any particular reason why Plays, Favorites, and Top Artists have nothing to do with what I'm actually listening to either on my Zune or from the Zune software?

I love my Zune and listen to it constantly via a speaker dock. It synchs wirelessly (I love that feature!) a couple of times a day when I pause it to make/take a phone call, but it seems that the music I've actually been listening to has nothing to do with the Zune social listening stats.

On the assumption that this isn't an implemented feature and it's all to do with what 30 second samples I've listened to on the web site, will you be implementing actuall listening stats any time soon?

Thanks,

Derek.

@Derek: what's your Zune Tag? I'd like to check out your page and see what's up.

@Trastan: YAY! Nothing makes me happier than introducing people to the music I love. :-)

Hi Jessica,

My Zune tag is "Derek Lakin", I've just added you onto my friends list, too. You should be able to see that I've got a couple of Favorites, which I added manually via the web site, but there are no stats for plays :(

Thanks,

Derek.

Okay, so it's the beginning of July, and I've been reading Zune Insider for a little while (~3 months).  I'm in college, so when the semester ends, I don't have the same sort of access to the internet as I once had, and suddenly I come back to Zune Insider and see changes being made! Woah!  It's not just Cesar anymore (Which as much as I appreciate what he does, it's encouraging to see it grow).  That being said, I notice that you are the program manager and handle some of what goes into the zune.  A question I've been asking for a while (I'm not even sure if this is the right place to ask it) but why can't there be an "add to quicklist" option when the music is playing on the zune?  I have more music than I have listened to on there, so sometimes I find new music on my zune, and I want to tailor my quicklist to a certain mood.  So I'll shuffle through a number of songs in the "play all songs" option and for each that I want to add, I have to go all the way back to the artist to find the song and then return to what was playing.  Either that, or I have to surf through my albums and try to remember what some songs sounds like, and so on and so forth.  Wouldn't it be so much easier just to add to quicklist from the 'now playing'?

i would love to be able to play music off my zune!

or to be able to view all songs by an artist at once, with album thumbnails to the side. that is so i dont have to "play all" and then be confused by the fact the songs are in album order, not alphabetical. :D
