I've heard reports on the internets about folks in Zune Social adjusting their listening habits to better represent their musical tastes. To appear cooler, essentially.

Is there any truth to this? Be honest: when you play music that will be displayed on your Zune Card, do you adjust your playlist? Drop a comment!

My Zune Card (un-adjusted):

Yes, I'm guilty.

Why I have no idea, hardly anyone ever sees my Zune card anyway, as I'm pretty much the Zune crusader in my circle of friends -- no one else has one.

When I first got a Zune Card I noticed I was skipping songs I didn't want to appear on it... then again, my music is thought "uncool" by everyone I know anyways and I quickly got over it ;)

Meh, not to much.

Sometimes I will listen to a particular band MORE with the knowledge it will get on my Zune card, but normally I just add a few extra instances of it to my playlist.

I rarely skip a song because it wont look good on my card. Music is about personal taste and opinion.

i listen to what i like. personally i dont care if what i like is cool or not. there are songs that i like that arent even related to the genre i usually like but i just think it shows i have a wider range of musical taste :) the zune card is the last thing on my mind when im listening to my music. well not the last thing since the zune card is an amazing idea.

hey cesar, any news on zune alarm clock docks? im switching to night shift at work. i need a good alarm clock now ;)

thanks. the zune rocks!

Well, I listen to uncool music still, but now I cover it up with something "good" afterwards.  For example, if I play my Celine Dion or Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits, I'll quickly listen to something like Johnny Cash or Pink Floyd. (And I know you young hip kids think everything I listen to is creaky and boring, but believe me, in my cohort, you dont get much cooler than Pink Floyd and the Man In Black.)

The key is to make sure that your recent plays list on zune.net doesnt have show tunes and stuff like that on it.

I admit, I have strayed from the path and occasionally played a guilty pleasure song, think Britney Spears or Yaz. If I see one of these show up on my Zune card, I will quickly play just about anything to bump them down the list to keep my secret safe. I would not listen to music of a particular genre just for appearances sake, but I have to imagine some Zune users create some "cool" playlists and just let them go overnight to pad their Zune card or most played lists.

I did the same as Leif902. Eventually you get over the fact that the Bee Gees might show up in your Card. I might be concerned if I had a 'following' but then I'd probably only listen to the very coolest music anyway.

Yes, more in the beginning than now.  I would play certain artists/songs just so that they would be on the top, eventually I got tired of playing them.

I do.

Not so much. Though I did buy my Zune 30 used and when I connected it, it uploaded about 150 fifty Timbaland plays and about fifty each by 50 Cent, Alicia Keys, and Kanye West. It *really* bugged me that Timbaland was my number one artist for so long because I've never in my life listened to anything by him or the others. And with plays not tracking correctly there wasn't much I could do about it. There were there for quite a while, and I didn't really feel comfortable putting out friend invites while my most listened list reflected somebody else's musical tastes.

I used to think like that, then I just changed my privacy settings to "don't show to anyone" or equivalent.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one.

I found myself drifting towards this since I was on Last.fm.  I don't know what it is... a sort of self-consciousness, perhaps, of your music being out there for others to view and what they might think?

It's what's wound up cooling my interest in the "social" aspects of listening to music, at least for now.

Yeah, I've played a ton of music in the beginning of the year to hide the fact that we played Celine Dion over and over this past Christmas Eve.  Don't get me wrong, I like Celine..awesome voice for her genre.  There should be some way to toggle on/off when tracking is enabled.

Just like in real life, I could care less about what's "cool". Pink Floyd forever!

I don't purposely play songs to seem cooler, but I rush to skip an "embarrassing" song that I want to delete, but haven't yet, before it hits the 20 second mark.

Me? Not really. I have been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith lately but other than that. I just go to songs and select "Shuffle All"

Not really, but I understand why most would. If you take a look at my card, you see the occasional Celine Dion or Little Einsteins track...lol. Hey, they're nice at some points in life.

I used to be all about listening to whatever anyone else thought was cool. Now, however, I'm convinced that MY music is much cooler, and I'm more interested in converting more people over to the awesome music I listen to daily. :)

I usually just shuffle my collection. when i get some new music i will listen to just that for a bit but then i go back to just shuffling my collection. all my music is cool so i dont have to worry bout nuthin. ha

i don't. i have a very eclectic music collection. floyd, roger waters, rehab, bob dylan, shinedown, the mars volta, aerosmith, and i can't leave out the only and only crazy diamond- syd barrett.

i had to remove all my backstreet boys albums from my zune so that it wouldn't show up on my social.

you took AJ away from me :(

side note: cesar, it came today. thanks

When I have a choice to play a song through the Zune or the Zune software, vs. the Xbox 360 or a CD player (neither of which record plays), I'll often choose the former if I want the song to appear on my card.

So I change my listening habits to look cooler, but the change is more subtle (I still listen to the same songs, just through different services).

Nah. I pretty much put mine on random and let it fly. I don't adjust anything.

Yep.  I did the same thing when I used last.fm, as they had a widget that could go on myspace and facebook and the like.  If I listened to something that might be seen as "uncool", I'd be sure to follow it up with however many songs it took to push it off the "recently played" area.  I still do it.

I've already adjusted my Zune card once by adding a few, diverse songs that best represent my favorite music. This way, various random songs that I listen to one my Zune (that is, songs that I may or may not like) don't pop up in the Zune Card.

I have both a 5th gen iPod, and more recently, a 30gb Zune. My iPod has ~25gb of music that I have 'approved', music that I know that I like, and most of it rated.  I use my Zune for storing all of my new and incoming music. New albums from friends that might appeal to me, but I've only listened to a song or two so I'm not sure yet.

For example, my friend lent me his collection of Sea & Cake CDs, since there have been a few songs by them that I've really liked. Fast forward a few weeks, and I've listened to a ton of their music, and most of it is terribly repetitive. I will only be keeping a few songs from the Sea & Cake; while I've listened to ton of their songs recently, they aren't one of my top-rated bands, and thus I don't want them on my Zune card.

[Also, this all goes to show the importance of 1 to 5 star ratings]

That's funny this came up.  I have to admit that, yes, before I would not play certain "uncool" music when I first got my Zune.  However, at this point I don't really care, I listen to what I want.

Not really. I choose whatever i want to listen to, although i wish some music would show up but it doesn't.

I'd like to see eBooks eventually show up on people's Zune Cards in addition to people's music.

Did you hear? eBooks are starting to be released in DRM-free format.

Now we just need the Zune to be able to bookmark a MP3 file labeled as a "Book".

I'm just a "Shuffle All" guy. If it appears on my zune card, I could care less whether someone likes/dislikes it =P

You know, It really doesn't matter what I play because My wife and I share music, and zune software.  Thus, we share the account.  So when I play cool stuff, her Conway Twitty and Dolly Parton may still show due to the sheer volume of her listening to the same thing...  The cool thing is if something lame shows up I can blame her! :)

Ok, I'll admit that I did at first.  Then I realized that everyone's musical tastes were just as quirky as mine, so now I just play what I want to play.

My music is so old I don't even worry about it. I'm old enough to be uncool if want to be.

Not at all... Although I'll admit I would like to because my wife and I share our ZunePass so my music is not properly represented anway.

I'm the only Zune user among my friends too, and I have a somewhat eclectic selection. However (/gripe on) I notice very few of the songs played (both on the device and software) actually show up on the card, despite being in both AMG *and* the Zune marketplace. (/gripe off) So in the end, for me, it doesn't really matter what I play since no one will ever know.

I do hope this is being addressed?

I did at the beginning, just because I wanted to see my name on the "most plays for this artist" section, but then I gave up on that and just went back to "Shuffle All."

We really need an autoplaylist for something as simple as "Everything I didn't mark as 'don't like,'" though, because I get tired of skipping songs.

All of my music is cool (at least in my own mind). Therefore I don't adjust my listening habits for the sake of my Zune Card at all. However, sometimes the stuff my wife listens to shows up, and that's a little embarrassing, since she has very very very different tastes than me.

When you're this cool, you don't need to make adjustments.

Not here. I listen to a lot of Christian music because in my mind it is cool. I am sure that, unfortunately, many would disagree. The Zune card is about our personal taste. Why is it we will paint our hair and fingernails or dress goth to get attention when many people will think that action is lame but we will not show our true taste of music? Music choices should be about whatever truly makes you feel good. It is certainly not about being cool.

Unfortunatly yeah.

I find myself doing it more now adays than I did when I first got my Zune, but in the long run how often do people really look at my Zune card.  But, I also use my Zune Pass to check out all the new music that comes out to see if I am going to like it enough to purchase the album..so my card shows alot of music that I don't listen too all the time.

At first I did think twice before i played a *N'SYNC song or something I thought I didn't want people to see, but I got over it and don't censor myself anymore

Like most people mention, I did this at first but lately I don't bother. Then again there are times when I leave my machine while music is playing, so all kinds of stuff ends up on the Zune card.

Oh crap, who told on me!  I did at first, but then I realized nobody was checking out my social page, so I gave up.  I don't think anyone in Indiana has a Zune.

At first yes, but now I just play whatever I like at the moment. Also, why play the same music that everyone else is playing, just play want you actually like.

No

It doesn't change my listening habit.  I think it is cool to see the artists I naturally listen to.  Most of it reflects my favorites.

I guess it's a product of age but whatever I listen to is cool to me and who cares what anyone else thinks. My musical taste is so varied that most people would think that my Zune Card is messed up, but it's pretty accurate.

When I was younger, I would hear a song I liked on the radio and go buy the tape or CD. I listened to so many "uncool" songs, I ran out of hiding places for the cases so no one would see them!

Now I have a 13 year old daughter and I hear her defending The Eagles and Mothers Finest to her friends at the same time Carrie Underwood is playing on her My Space page!

I have 3 Zune's, one runs in random mode playing my 4000+ Zune Pass songs 24/7 in a Zune dock (to entertain my cat).

I have something like 18000+ plays so I look very cool regardless of what songs I play...

Zune Social music scrobbler dont work very well. It's suck compared with Last.Fm.

At first I played songs from bands I like that not many have heard of, but as the social seems to reset my most played artists and songs from time to time, I just play what I play.

When can i get a zune tab on windows live messager.

Nope I listen to what I want to listen to at that time, and enjoy what I want to enjoy.
