Strange... I received the v2.3 update for my Zune 30 on Sunday itself.

Quick question. The last update caused resume points in podcasts to be reset every sync. is this going to be fixed in this update?

pretty such they mean the pc client software, not the device software.

oh also... isn't 2.3 an update we received already? isn't the one coming today 2.4ish?

Not really the thread to post this question, but does anyone know why I always end up with more songs on my device than what is being shown on the software? Weird.

I think it's time for an update that actually adds features. I'm sure you guys are working hard to include features to make the Zune and its software perfect; features that everyone has been asking for. But throw a dog a bone. Give us something to nibble at while you issue an update with all the new features.

For example, allow us to sort videos (within the Zune software) by show name, genre, etc. Allow us to manually modify video metadata so we can tell the Zune a video is a movie, TV show, or music video.

Guys, the firmware is at 2.3, the software is still at 2.1.  Looks like this will bring them all in line with each other.

Very nice!  I'm ok with no new features for right now.  We just got the new firmware, with podcasts, etc.  I'm happy to get a general performance and stability release.  There are some annoying bugs in the desktop client that I'm looking forward to seeing gone ;-)

This update is great!  The Software runs so much smoother!  Great update!

Question: When I boot up the software, go to Settings, then General, then the CHeck For Updates button, it says that everything is up to date even though I'm running 2.1.888.2 or something like that. What's the deal? The device is 2.3.

To those who are complaining about no new features: You guys are new right? They didn't release any new features between the two Zune launches last year, and sucky as it may be, I doubt they're gonna do it this year either.

I'm with Adi R.  I hope this will fix the problem with podcasts periodically unsubscribing themselves.  It gets annoying having to go back and resubscribe to all my podcasts every few days.

after the update, the software crashes and I can't even open the software.  right now as I'm typing into this, I'm sending an error report regarding this crash and it must be really big in size cuz it's been sending it for 10 minutes now!  I'm not sure what the error is, but it says something like this under "Error signature".

Yor're all confusing Firmware with Software.  Firmware version 2.3 (which resides on the Zune itself), was in fact released a while ago. This is Software version 2.3...  the stuff that runs on your computer.

Didn't fix any of my problems. I still can't edit certain meta-data that seems stuck on the incorrect info.

Okay, I'm done typing in caps. It's frustrating though because I installed windows on this macbook but it gave me the blue screen of death so I can't use it.

I love my zune though :(

Downloaded and installed fine, but still have the metadata problem. It's hit and miss if I rip a cd on WMP11, if it will then show up in Zune in its correct form, or as Unknown Album / Unknown Artist - even though all the metadata is intact.

How about restoring some faith from the Zune community by sharing the road map for planned feature additions to the Zune software. Bug fixes are great, but basic features is what we really want.

The big secret things you can leave out, and instead of just giving us a huge update in June or December next year (or whatever), how about giving us the little things we want now (tag editing, copy without sync, etc), making us happy and then add the secret stuff.

Oh, and please remove the IP filter on the Zune cards. Songs played outside the US should be added aswell. It is a portable device!

after installing the new software update 2.3,i connected my zune30 to the comp  and i got this error:

"READ ERROR:-

I've tried many times reconnecting my zune and rebooting my comp..same problem still appears..

glad that the updates continue, but please bring back smart playlists and 5 star rating system.  I preordered the original zune and used it happily since 2006.  since my Zune was "upgraded" I have been using my iPod again, because at least it serves up features that are useful that listen to music.  

I know this isn't the forum for discussing missing features, but why not discuss it here given Microsoft's apparent lack of interest in restoring original features.  Again thanks for dragging me back to the iPod.

R4C777...found a fix that worked for me... find the C:/Windows/system32/drivers/wdf01000.sys file and rename it wdf01000.sys.bak...then install. It worked for me.

Before I updated I had 12.4 gb available on my zune 30  after this current update i have 1.3 left.  How do i fix that?

A feature I really would like is that the "Now Playing" thing works with MSN Messenger AND says that you are using the Zune software to play your music. Just to show off.

WOOT! now my wireless sync works again. Funny. Seems that when it couldn't connect to the PC it was because of the zune software NOT my wireless AP with WPA like so many were insisting was the problem(I told you so)

I'm having the same problem as rVd. When I connect my 30Gb, I get an error:

Read Error

The Zune software can't access important data on your Zune. Try disconnecting and reconnecting it. If the problem persists, contact customer support.

This software update still does not fix my metadata issues.  No matter how I edit the metadata (zune software, wmp11, mp3tag, etc), even with the software set to not update  album art and media information, it keeps reverting to the wrong information. I've converted/updated all of my tags to ID3v2.3 UTF-16.  I've ran the album patch from Microsoft numerous times.  It's bad enough that the metadata got screwed up, but even more frustrating that I can't even manually fix it.  I've gotten to the point now where I won't load any new content on the Zune.  At this point I would give up all  of the new features of the firmware just to go back to the old software that worked well.  I'm very disappointed.

I think the update that was issued whether it is a firmware or software just bites........... I would think with all of the intelligence at Microsoft they would get it right.  But the update is worse than the original program..........Why should I have to spend hours......either fixing all of the bugs it created or spend time on the phone fixing the problem..............

I'm having the exact same problem as rVd. I've even totally reinstalled Vista on my machine (I was planning on doing it anyways) and it still gives the same "can't access important data on your Zune" dialog. How aggravating!

I think this update is more of a total reinstall. I have mess around with it a lot and I believe it totally removed 2.2 and changed the registry so that I cannot use my Zune as a hard drive. I think this also prevents the use of zAlternator. R

hey George have you tried running microsofts ZuneMediaCollectionResetTool? might be worth a try if you haven't.

Since the 2.3 update, my wireless sync does not work anymore.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, it did not help.  It worked perfectly fine for months before this update.

Anyone else struggling with wireless sync since this latest update?

And why is there no e-mail support for zune?  I HAVE to call?  So I HAVE to sit on hold for like 3 hours?

With the Read Error I ended up having to do a hard reset (erases all content and Firmware).

Turn off device, then hold Back, Center, and Left.  Folow instructions on device and then resync everything.

Yes, I have run the ZuneMediaCollectionResetTool.  Multiple times in fact.  I have also tried to do it manually as described in the KB article 945319.  

New features are great but they need to address features that do not work well.  For instance library folder management is horrible.  Removing a folder from your library won't remove the songs.  You have to go in and search for the individual songs to delete them (that or delete the folder from your hard drive!).  This is such a basic feature and it's crap quite frankly.  How do they expect us to manage our collections like this?  I hope they read this and address it.  To the zune team.."Lose the persistent folder settings".  Give us full control of our collections and which folders do and do not belong in them!

I agree.  The inability to effectively manage the music collection is a nuisance.  That should be a top priority.

I have had my Zune 30 gig just a couple months, was surprised to find no custom equalizer, how hard would it be to put that in a firmware update?

When I bought the Zune I just assumed it would have one like my Creative Zen Jukebox did.

Why cant Zune play avi files yet this is rediculous and it is pissing me off really bad right now because with vista it takes hours to try and convert movies to wmv's

i received the update...but it made everything erase off my zune....i can't even install the update...it keeps on popping up an error page and saying that there isn't enough space on the computer to install it....but there is enough space...Please if anyone knows how to fix this...please write back somehow...before i have to return it.

Thanks for the advice jimlat.  I finally got the update installed.  I had been getting all kinds of errors, but switched the file at C:/Windows/system32/drivers/wdf01000.sys file and renamed it wdf01000.sys.bak...then installed. It worked for me.

Help.  I'm not a techie.  What does jimlat mean. I can't stand the Read Error message.  I need my podcasts.  Please help.

I have the same problem as Chio, the other day i got an error message that i needed to erase everything on my zune.. so i clicked ok but it just resets so i deleted the content manually by holding the back button the switching, and then i connected it to the computer and now it says i need to update but when i try to update it says that i dont have enough space on my computer but i still have like 30 GB on here.. anyone know anything about it?

I recently purchased a Zune 80GB about 1 week ago. After installing the 2.3.1338.0 firmware I noticed that my Zune restarts randomly, my whole video files seems to be cut off either in the middle, part of the beginning, and easily stops if moved too much. I'm unsure if it's a firmware issue based on the boards or if it's my Zune that's defective in the hard drive. Any suggestions on how I can check for these errors?

I love the update. Wireless sync an buy from FM are great. Audible books were a must. Now all I need is to be able to use podcasts in play lists and i can finally be Ipod free. How hard can it be to make play lists using podcasts? I do it on my Ipods all the time, it seems that my 30,80,4 gb Zunes should be able to handle too. Come on MS I have been asking for this since the 1st gen 30. I walk a mail route and to have to pull my Zune out each time a podcast finishes playing to start another is a pain. Ipod allows me to make a list start it up and let it run till Im done.You make superior hardware, now let it perform

I have an error msg that says my zune needs to be reconfigured...how is this to be done?  I have spent hours on the phone with CS and they have no resolution.  The error prevents me from syncing anything from the marketplay.  I was able to do it in the past and haven't been able to do it since the 3.0 update....Anyone?

For everyone with the "Read Error" Cannot read important data all we did was reset the Zune, not reformat the drive. Just hold the back button and the up button and it will restart. like a locked up computer then it should connect fine =)

I just downloaded the new software and now I cannot get the music to shuffle between albums on the playlist.  Any suggestions>

I have the same error with the software saying it cant read important data on my zune. I CANT SYNC ANYTHING ON IT! I have the zune 80. If it helps with getting a solution, I updated my zune on another computer to the max but the zune software here at home isn't  fully updated. Please dont tell me to update the software. If there is an alternative method, please tell.
