Our buddies at on10 had a chance to sit down with Robbie Bach at CES. Robbie talks at length about the vision for connected entertainment, and the overarching strategy for the Entertainment and Devices Division (of which Zune is a part).

(zune gets a mention at 10:26 mark; but I'd watch the whole video).

Thanks.

Hey Cesar, I got your Zune message, but I was unable to reply. I guess your Zune Tag was not operational or whatever. Anyhoo, just wanted to say that I am the very CaptStu from Evil Avatar. There's quite a few Zune fans over there, so don't be shy. If there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to send me another message.

I appreciate it.

Thanks

Cesar?  What happened to your ZuneCard?  It says ????????? for your name?

For me, "connected entertainment" means much more than what Robbie is discussing.  I feel like the consumers' idea of what this means is vastly different than simply being "in the cloud services."  In fact, most in the cloud experiences won't function nicely without some kind of super wireless connection that exceeds even the potential WiMax, which is at least 10 years away rom mass adoption.

For me, MS should start with connecting their own products to each other.  Today, I can download several gigs of video to my 360 and I'm not able to transfer even one Megabyte of those videos to my zune.  That's not exactly connected.  Better yet, my brand new Shadow phone running Windows Mobile sits in my pocket but has an outdated, archaic version of windows media player. And, the Zune in my other pocket has a top of the line music experience.  Connected? Not even Robbie himself could say that it is. There are so many instances of this across the E & D division that it actually makes me cringe everytime I hear the words "connected entertainment" come from the MS camp.

I end with the most glaring disconnect wihin the E & D division:  Microsoft has arguably the biggest, baddest gaming console ever on the market along with their Games for Windows Platform, and today you can download tons of games on Ipod but Zero on a Zune...no, not even tetris.

Connected?  Hey, this is the second year in a row that they're throwing this around, so I guess we'll revisit this word at CES 2009.  Until then, I hope MS refrains from using it until it is actually appropriate.

well said. maybe they're working on that? hopefully?

or would they get slammed by the EU or US for being a monopoly if they do that?

well said, sportsunit.

What I'd like is for the 360 to be more connected to MS's online network:  Let me view/post to my windows live space from the 360 dashboard.  Ditto for my zune social page -- let me access it through the dashboard.  (id have to buy a chatpad, but that would be ubercool).

Also Let me browse through zune social on the 360 and sample music right through my xbox.

Nice sportsunit - very good thought....
