Our Division Mentioned Twice During WWDC

I saw the WWDC coverage on Engadget a little bit today and noticed that Entertainment and Devices (the division of which Zune, Games for Windows, and Xbox are a part) got two mentions in the Keynote: John Hodgman, playing "The PC Guy" referenced the brown Zune, and then John Carmack from id software said they’d have next gen game-tech Mac, PS3 and Xbox at E3.  Sure, the first mention was typical Jobs sarcasm, but we’re clearly on his mind these days. And hey, we’ll happily take the publicity from a couple of mentions in front tens of thousands of people.

More coverage at Gizmodo.

ya, they made fun of microsoft and then promply listed all the "new" features in leopard that they stole from vista (oh and 1 from linux/unix)

Zuney Toon

I bought a 2nd Zune for my wife yesterday just to screw with Jobs's head.

It is too funny that a device that Brand X users love to pretend no one wants, just keeps getting under their skin enough where they have to mention it during their confabs.

char

I had to chuckle at the price slam on Vista, though.

Mark

@char: ya but vista is an entirely new OS, leopard isn't OS11, it's basically OS10 sp 5. For service packs with windows its... well free

Woody56292

As I type this on the new Safari 3 beta for Windows....

I was disappointed to see Steve knock the Zune. Maybe Bill Gates should send him a limited edition Mac Zune with "Think Different" on the back of it and Gates signature. It could be filled with the Mac vs. PC ads, all of his keynotes and all  of Job's favorite songs ( the beatles, red hot chili peppers, the Gorillaz )

=D

Apple sure pays a lot of attention to what EDD is doing. Say what you will but I think they are worried.

Ricardo Dawkins

I knew you *all* would be watching that ifanboy fest...instead of working on firmware / zune software advances...

Ricardo Dawkins

Stefan: who is EDD ?

John in S.Florida

Ricardo, thats a reference to the Entertainment & Devices Division.

Matt Newman

Congrats Zune Team! Apple is scared, if they weren't they would be ignoring it. I love my Zune, and the only problem my Fiancee has with it is that I bought it before the pink Zunes came out.

Lara

I happily purchased my zune last sunday and was pleased with it expect for installation. Microsoft really needs to work on that. If it could be compatible with Mac that'd be cool since I've got a macbook pro, but using my mom's computer wasn't much of a problem. :)

Keep up the good work.

John in S.Florida

Ricardo, "instead of working on firmware/zune software advances"  Marketing types have a responsibility to keep track of their competitors.  What do you propose..that the Dev team be housed at Zune headquarters and  given three square meals?  could work! lol

Ricardo Dawkins

John: with *all* I mean the full Zune Team..not just marketing.

Hope you can understand. Later

Ughh cesar, i am disgusted that you linked to Gizmodo to give them more traffic. Giz have shown nothing but hatred for zune but mainly ms in general and I have zero respect for Brian Lam.

Da

I think Apple would be more afraid if the Zune had podcast - or better yet if the Zune was able to "squirt" podcast to friends without restrictions. No need for restrictions anyway seeing that podcast are free.

So much potential with wifi! hope Zune two gets here before I am swayed towards the 6 gen touch iPod.

RomeoDude

Haha, Congrats!!  Well I guess Apple views the Zune as a big competitor to the iPod.  One thing I've noticed is that Apple likes to put down Microsoft but Microsoft (with the exception of a few ad spoofs) doesn't really attack Apple products.

As for the keynote... I guess the redesigned Finder and desktop for OS X looks cool, and I really like Safari browser for Windows.  I'm kinda impressed with the OS X improvements and the Safari Beta, but the keynote seemed to be lacking in terms of iPhone announcements.

Go Zune!

ray

Does no one else think the safari browser kinda sucks? I use firefox and no other browser compares to it. There are so many extensions and customization options that make it so cool. Any feature any other browser has firefox will have it too, through add ons/extensions.

@ Cesar

You have to fix up your page for Safari on Windows..it ain't looking right.

Adam K

damien

I've pften wondered why Apple insists on poking fun at WIndows - especially considering that it's iPod/iTunes line would be nothing without Windows support.

Everyone knows that the reason Safari is on Windows now is because it's needed for developers to make apps for the Windows-supported iPhone or else the device would flop.

Ah, well... any publicity is good publicity... unless you're Paris Hilton!

(Oh, and Safari Windows is nice, but I'm a little concerned about the security risks that popped up in the beta: http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/12/apples-safari-a-windows-security-risk)

admin

damien, eh, it's ok, we roll with the punches. it's interesting, though - do people know that outside of Apple, Microsoft is the number 2 developer on the mac platform? (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/06/08/microsofts-macbu-gets-new-gm-craig-eisler/)

Plus competition is good for the market. Good stuff all around :)

Rohit

Hey,

Just in case you did not know, right now Safari is not secure. I would advise waiting for some time:

I saw the WWDC as well....can't for Leapard release as I'm switching from the PC to the iMac with Leapard. Can't wait for the new gaming capabilities for the mac!!!!

Zuneless

"One thing I've noticed is that Apple likes to put down Microsoft but Microsoft (with the exception of a few ad spoofs) doesn't really attack Apple products."

Yeah, Microsoft prefers to just *copy* Apple products.

Christopher

Nelson

You mean like Microsoft copied Time Machine? Oh wait.

Mark

Zuneless:

you mean like how vista stole quicklook from apple? Oh... wait...

Kano

You guys need to lighten up. Just be happy with your Zune and wish that it gets better. If you need some chuckles, check out Fake Steve Ballmer's Blog:

Pseudowhis

Confession: Mac fan, but I'd just like to point out that John Hodgman was actually holding a real brown Zune for Apple's piss take, so I mean you probably made some money off that.

Robbie

@Mark

Let me tell you, those 2 XP service packs were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Woody56292

btw, how cool was that zune looking on camera. How could they not love it? Zune clearly has ipod beat in the looks department. ( too bad they didn't have a new red one for him to show off )

Eric

@Ray, I agree about Giz. But on other issues than just MS stuff.

About ZuneInsider not working in Safari, well it doesn't work in Firefox so I doubt El Cesar is going to change it for Safari.

Josh

@Mark

"all the 'new' features in leopard that they stole from vista (oh and 1 from linux/unix)"

I'm all about bashing elitist macheads, too, but let's be honest with ourselves. There isn't a single feature "stolen" from Vista in Mac OS X (or any other Mac OS probably). Flip3D existed before as Expose, Gadgets as Dashboard Widgets, and TimeMachine is just weird (and actually kinda cool) and completely unlike anything else. Everything that has been stolen, has certainly been stolen in the other direction (i.e., Vista borrowing inspiration from Mac OS X).

Macheads are correct about all of this, but do they all have to be so darn snobbish about it?

Steve Ballmer

You guys are doing a great job!
