We're On Track To Sell One Million Zune Players

A lot of folks asked me over the weekend about this article in the S.F. Chronicle. Robbie was actually misquoted - you can find an actual recording of the interview here.

So for the record, we haven't made any official announcements on our sales numbers. We are on track, though, to sell one million devices before the end of the fiscal year (June 30). In addition, we've achieved our goal of being the number 2 player in the hard-drive category. And speaking of the Zune community, our friends at the 'Corps have an interesting take on it.

Hope everybody had a great weekend!

Million today or next week, you guys have done a great job in 6 months against a very determined, and demented iP** media machine that has sought to do nothing by run you guys out of town.

You folks seem to be getting you sea legs and are very upbeat about your work!

Keep the good stuff going!

ray

I agree with Zuney Toon. It's great to see you guys standing strong in the face of so much negativity in the media to bring you down.

By the way, any comment on this big announcement Cesar?

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/trick-or-treat%3F/top-secret-microsoft-product-to-launch-at-midnight-264082.php

I just got my summer holidays today from school- 3 months of bliss with my zune which should arrive any day now.

You mean other than "we don't comment on rumors and speculation," Ray?  ;)

ray

Lol yes but if there really is an announcement tonight (even if it's to do with the xbox) promise us you will give us some kind of "insider" scoop on it because the xbox is the in same division of microsoft as the zune.

BTW that link you posted to the zune corps article is a very good onea and I would agree with it as increasingly  I am seeing more positive attitudes towards the zune on the net and it is all being driven by the small but very vocal zune users community (and ricardo dawkins of course;) and soon I will be one of them!

hoohoo

so is this supposed 1 million full of channel stuffed units, like the 360 10 million announcement?

TheNumberDevil

Another example of Zune gaining traction (the iFanBoys will of course relate this to Paul Allen and Microsoft :-))

The EMP (Experience Music Project) in Seattle has a ZMP (not Zune Marketplace but Zune Media Project) display. They have 4 or 5 Zunes on a table to play around. It might be good marketing if someone from The Zune Team was available on hand to explain the wonderful features of the Zune Player.

A lot of schools take the kids for field trips to the EMP and a Zune Evangelist would help things a lot ...

Ricardo Dawkins

hey all. What is going on ?

So Halo Zune will help propel (sp) the player beyond the 1 million mark. Very Good.

When is the party for the 1 million Zunes ?

Cesar, can you hire me to update your blog when you are on vacation or holidays ?

+1 for Zuney Toon for that comments. spot on!.

Anyway. Congrats again, Zune Team and Don't drop the ball.

Selcouth14

As I said on Gizmodo, beginning of June, end of June, doesn't matter. 1 million is a milestone and can only serve to help us consumers...plus maybe push out v2.0 or flashy mcflash zune?

Keep up the work that is good!

Why the Entertainment division don't set a few POS the same way that DJ set up on your offices ?

That setup would rock on any Point-Of-Sales at any department or computer stores...at least try to use those neon stands with the Zune docks.

Where we can get those lighted stands ?

I'm not trying to put the Zune down or anything but, I think your goal should always be #1.

Set the bar, don't meet it. I'm not trying to downplay your success (it has been amazing success, 1 million in six months is impressive as hell)

I'm just hoping that now that you're number two, you are not satisfied with it :).

I want to be yelling in the future with my Zune

"We're #1!"

because

"We're #2!" doesn't sound quite right :).

Anyhow, great work guys. I think part of it (like the Zune Corps article explains) is how enthusiastic Zune users are about their players. Personally, I show mine off to everyone who asks and explain the features in detail.

I'm seeing an ever growing number of Zunes around my school as well (I even saw a brown one in the wild..) so that means, it's catching up.

These things have generated quite a bit of hype with some at my school labeling them "upgraded iPods" or "like an iPod but cooler".

Sometimes being the underdog has it's advantages :).

TheMan

blah, blah, blah.  Second hand news. Zuneinsider be the inside news!!!  (you guys can be fist anytime now!!!)

Does everyone agree that more would sell if videos were available on the marketplace? It'd be the "in thing" most talked about, and popular device. Imagine i just watched my favorite tv show/movie on my zune...Heaven!!!

Rohit

Ray... I bet its the PlayTable.

You can read about it here...

It will be awsome to have Zune with this technology.

Wow, that just goes to show you,Cesar, that we really do want the success of the Zune.

We want YOU to innovate the mp3 world and how music is brought to the community. You already have the Wi-Fi, now make use of it. I really mean it, I want Microsoft to come up with something new and innovative.

Tom

Screw that....fix the broken before bringing out the new stuff. We need firmware updates fast.

Brendan

Congratulations on reaching your goal. I'm sure your success will only increase as time progresses.

Yeah i tried to win that Halo Zune on Gamertagradio, but i didnt, seeing how the probability of me winning was only about 1 in 175. Well I'll end up buying one eventually. Until then I got my white one.

Thanks for uploading this, it gave me something to read on my lunch break.

Zune Corps statement that the zune is the new apple in the digital music world is very true.  Part of this is because in the everyday world people do associate Zune with Microsoft (which  was very smart on their part).

Everywhere you go you can still see the iconic white headphones and people dismiss listening to an ipod the same as talking on your cell phone.  This is not the same when walking around with Zune.  People see the device and ask "is that your ipod?" as if someone with a zune had a secret in with apple to test the new ipod (ironic but true).  Then, similar to having an apple, people begin to assume that a zune user knows a little more about digital music then your average ipod user (which is very funny).

If J and Microsoft wanted to PULL a REALLY GOOD PRANK they would start selling a limited set of  media themed PC and Notebooks under the Zune label using a modified version of Vista that felt more Zune then Microsoft.  Imagine a brown laptop with a green double shot "is that the new apple laptop?"

Ripped

Is that one million to retailers...or one million to users?

If it's to stores, and not to people, its a bit deceptive.

I was just reading the following story about Surface http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18928656/ and this paragraph caught my eye...

"One of the most revolutionary aspects of Surface, though, is its natural interaction with everyday objects and technologies. When you place your wi-fi enabled digital camera on the table, for example, Surface ‘sees’ the camera and does something extraordinary: It pulls your digital pictures and videos out onto the table for you to look at, move, edit or send. Images literally spill out in a pool of color."

Sounds like if I put my Zune on the table they would be able to interact with each other. Have you been told anything about Surface aka Milan?

ray

Yup it's the touch screen table thing that was announcd. It looks so awesome but what's really cool is that ms officially showed the zune using it's wifi for wireless syncing which hopefully shows future firmware updates will allow this. It looks amazing, see it at:

http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ and click on "possibilities"

Also here there is a more real world demonstration where the zune is also shown wireless syncing:

Brendan

Congratulations. I'm sure ur success will only increase as time progresses.

I tried to win that Halo 3 Zune on gamertagradio, but i didnt seeing how the probability of me winning was about 1 in 175. O well. I'll most likely end up buying one anyway. I guess my white one will do for now.

doesn't look like anyone posted this (unless I over looked it). iWars: iPod vs. Zune:

If you haven't see it, you have to checkout  Microsoft Surface: www.microsoft.com/surface. Simply put, its awesome.  There is even a demo using Zunes placed on the surface computer.  Channel 10 (on10.net) interview revealed that the surface computer is detecting some sort of bar code on the object to determine what it is.  If thats the case, I imagine the v2 Zunes will come out with this "code" already preprinted on the back.  And data transfers would be via wireless technology.  Also interesting, is the use of customer loyality cards..I wonder if there is an application there for Zune too.  For example, you go to a concert & swipe your Zune loyality card to earn points or something.

Freakwncy/Reggie Hobbs

I've been saying this for the last month. Even over here in the desert were it takes a good wk. to recieve anything ordered online. The number of Zunes spotted and the people I see willing to share music and share how it works with non-Zune owners or iPod owners ready to take a bite out of the apple is overwhelming.

Just for sh_t n giggles, my friend and I wanted to see if my Zune could be reconized by his PSP. and the answer is no. Just FYI stuff. ;)

Telekinetyk

Sweet, congrats to the Zune team for reaching the goal! It's amazing how easy it is to sell these things through word of mouth, and showing them off to friends and family. Most everyone that sees mine is very interested in getting one of their own.
