I'm back in the Pacific Northwest today, I thought I'd do a quick recap, and tie up a few odds and ends. First, here's what the Zune room looked like at the Fader Fort. Also, remember the QOTSA debut a few days ago, at the breakfast? IGN has a preview of the album - check it out.

Tokyo Police Club at the Diesel Party (an awesome show):

And finally, some interesting statistics from SXSW:

  • Total number of miles I jogged/ran: approximately 12
  • Number of sleazy ironic, hipster mustaches I saw: approximately 378
  • Number of times I times I wanted to go up for the high-five, but didn't, because readers told me it's "old": approximately 3234
  • Best show I saw from a band/artist other than Tokyo Police Club: Lily Allen
  • Best SXSW playlist on Zune Marketplace: "SXSW 07: Editor's Picks"
  • Artist/band to watch in 2007 other than Tokyo Police Club:  Rodrigo y Gabriela
  • Number of times I was on “the list” to get into a venue – approximately 18
  • Number of times I had to cajole bouncers into putting bloggers/Zuneinsider on “the list:”  approximately 18
  • Total number of artists/bands I saw: approximately 50

Thanks to everyone who said hi, great meeting you, and we'll see you next year.

MARCH 20TH!!!!

Better add podcast and lyrics support like promised...

hawk - I actually mis-spoke on that one, check the edit: http://zuneinsider.com/archive/2007/02/28/zune-firmware-update-1-3-coming-mid-march-skipping-fixed.aspx

and the post also lists what's in this update :)

SO TODAY!!! 0_0?

I'm totally confused :(. I hope there's a firmware update that will add new features soon like in April. Good luck.

That room looks awesome!

Are we going to be seeing those posters anywhere else?  Which artist came up with the monkey/bull idea?  I LOVE it... that would make a great shirt!

i can't believe you updated that old thread today to say that there will be no firmware update tomorrow.  seriously, that is lame.  this is going to piss a lot of people off, and, i think, rightfully so.

f-

I'm so confused. When IS it coming out then?

MARCH 20th! NVM

Ya dude, I will excuse it this time but when you are delivering news like this to thousands of people only to find that there will be no firmware update, you will have to triple check. It also effects a role such high as yours.

Aside from this, when will it be released? Can you guys just do a quick revise and just do a quick line a code needed to display the clock :(.

This sleek MP3 player uses built-in wireless technology (802.11g, to be exact) to hop onto any available hot spots, allowing the user to grab music and photos without connecting to a PC. It is designed to work with online music services (specifics are yet to be determined), meaning you could potentially find and buy a song from just about anywhere (Starbucks comes to mind). How I've been waiting for this! I suppose I should thank Zing, whose mobile entertainment technology has made all of this possible. While you will be able to share music with other users, however, the Connect won't let you grab tracks living on your PC--not yet, anyway.

I hope this could be added to the Zune :(

So can you send a song to a friend wirelessly, just like the Zune? Well, because the Connect utilizes music services, the answer is yes.

If a customer is on the same music service as his buddy and wants to send him the hottest new track, a Connect owner just needs to ping him with the player, and the friend can rock out immediately to the new song, SanDisk said. According to the company, a Connect is not even required – Connect-to-PC connections are supported as well. Furthermore, since it's within the confines of a music service, there aren't any restrictions on how many times the track can be played.

I agree with nighthawkz6, this should also be added too

Why dont you people work on the pos Zune and stop going to parties...........

cesar, i'm afraid you're going to begin getting a lot more comments like dee's.  very few people actually care about the parties you attend or what your favorite band is.  i get why you're focused on that kind of thing ("it's about the music, man!"), but i don't think that approach is working.  people already have their own favorite bands; they're not that interested in yours.  what they do care about is what you're doing for the product you're selling, and that's the zune.  you don't sell music.  people telling you to focus on your priority, the product you produce, seems like a perfectly reasonable request.

Just please make the firmware update soon! This is just sad. You are our only source for news and then the news get changed just at the last second.

dead jim - thanks for your feedback, it's really nice to have your perspective here :)

Let me tell you about my day, real quick though, I worked alone all day, replacing drop ceiling tiles in a warehouse. I thought this morning hey it'd be great to take my Zune with me...WRONG!!! After listening to the insipid skipping all day, (which I have been forced to listen to before on another outting with my Zune) I came home and was excited and releived as I KNEW from zuneinsider.com that a fix for this horrid problem would be ready on MARCH 20, 2007, and then I checked on your site just to make sure it was still coming, only to find out that like Dee had mentioned *Party party party* for Zune people (please stop before you end up like Britney) and apparently you are so busy trying to keep up with what you think is cool and hip that you JUST NOW say something, the day before it was supposed to happen. I understand things, I do, but this incident of posting the Zune fix update boo-boo through a comment on here and not even on the front page has just sent me back to my iPod, yeah the screen is 1/2 inch smaller but at least A: I can purchase movies and videos from itunes B: Be able to listen to my ipod and not have to worry about any problems and C:The accessories and everything else are a heck of a lot cheaper than anything for Zune, I don't know I'm just crushed, sometimes I feel like I have a $250 paper-weight that sits on my desk and btw the wi-fi thing really sucks.

completely unrelated here just an observation...the girl at the bottom right corner of your background if flicking me off, not the most pleasant thing...

Just great no update. I'm sick of this.

Well, I'm glad you had fun and all, but seriously, the lack of update sucks. Ok, it's not the lack of update that I'm most upset at now, what I'm annoyed with is that one *month* ago you gave us a date, that date was quite a while off. You *promised* to check this date, you didn't until today. The fact that the Zune dev team didn't deliver is not the issue here, the issue here is simply that you couldn't be bothered to take 15 minutes out of your constant parties in order to make sure that the date was right. I mean, really, would it have been that hard?

Here's a tip, managing a community means being honest and open with that community and telling them what's happening. Look at Major Nelson, he keeps the Xbox owners in the loop, when things are going to ship he tells people about it. When things slip we get to find out weeks before the event. If you want another MS example have a look at the XNA team blog, you should be able to see that they have on there a list of features in the next update and when that update is shipping. Why, why, why can't you do the same? Come on, it's not rocket science.

Anyway, I'd like to say thankyou to the Zune team for all the hard work, if there is a Zune team, I'm just sorry that the mouthpiece for them is someone as uncommunicative and un-understating as you.

Stop partying and get to work!!! Man, the iPod seems more attractive day by day!

Just to back Cezar up here. Odds are, yesterday afternoon he got a call from the Dev's. "Cezar, you know that update we told you would be ready by the 20th? Yah were not done yet". Keep in mind guys, Cezar is Marketing. His job is to party.

All that said

This is really ticking me off, and when the FW update is out, there had better be some friken easter eggs in there

:shrug

If he got the call then he should tell us about it, rather than editting out any mention of the previous date. And he only mentioned it in some comments on an unrelated post and on a post that dropped off the front page, that's pretty lame.

Being on the "Front Line" It is his job to take the Flax from us. It is not his job to step aside and point at the dev's.

Editing that old post yesterday was totally uncool :( I thought MS had changed.

and just because I'm in a foul mood: Why do you try so hard to be cool?

High fives are still cool..I don't know what you're talking about.

Everyone here needs to chill out a bit.

The new modest mouse album came out today, go get that.

timedrifter: "when the FW update is out, there had better be some friken easter eggs in there"

Completely agree, we need a true Spring Update that can bring abit of enthusiasm back to Zune.  I holding some hope that Cesar revealed only a portion of what will actually be in the update.

Why do I get the distinct feeling that they started working on this after that thread? :)

i'm glad you appreciate the feedback.  i just sincerely want the zune to succeed.  i like the device.  i'm concerned that the influentials in the industry have already decided that the zune is a miss, and now the early adopters are beginning to feel that they're getting screwed.  you may not need both those groups for success down the line, but it seems like you are going to need at least one of them if the any significant success is to come in any reasonable amount of time.

i get that parties are your job, but, in all seriousness, i think your time would have been better spent on the phone with whoever makes decisions about release dates, features, etc than hanging out at sxsw.  while i get how important it is to rub elbows with individuals in the music industry at such an important event, none of that will make any difference if everyone who bought the zune feels so abandoned that they move on and buy ipods out of spite.  if you've been on the boards, i'm sure you know that that is exactly what people are beginning to do.  where they were threatening, now they are actually following through.  and that's just the people who bother to tell us what they're doing.  i'm doing my part trying to convince others that the zune offers many benefits and should be the device of choice, and i don't even get paid.  i just want to ensure that the people who do get paid care more about this than i do.

good luck.

Terrible news for the ppl with the needed patch.

AS thisneedtostop and dee said....STOP GOING TO PARTIES ALREADY. PERIOD.

YOU AND ALL THE ZUNE TEAM CAN PARTY AFTER YOU GET 1 MILLION ZUNE SALES BEFORE 1 YEAR (if ever). since by the look of it, the zune team is barely capable in bringing somethig so basic to the market.

Man, We know you are on marketing but going after every party is getting ridiculous. Tell the programmers that you need some features to *MARKET it* and *NOW*. The 30GB Zune device is almost half year old and they haven't added nothing new to the so upgradeable and promising machine.

This is getting really out of hand.

All of you complainers are whiny.  Geesh.  Annoying as hell.

It's completely pathetic that the first thing I did this morning was check to see if the FW update was available.  Before eating, showering, etc...  It was like being a kid at Christmas.

Well, except that when I was little I wasn't wanting Santa to bring me a patch so that the toy I already bought would stop skipping.  Back then I just wanted a Merlin.

Zune Santa comes down the chimney, kicks you square in the jewels, and walks out the back door with nary a word.

Matt Luers, you win the "Funniest Thing I've Read All Day!" award!!! Congratulations.

It might be tragic, but it's still freakin' hilarious.

Cesar, aren't you part of the music handling section of Zune? I know everybody is giving you guff for going to music related parties, but if your job is dealing with the music side of things, it would be reasonable to go to parties. Anyways, I doubt the programmers are out partying all the time(Maybe a lan party here and there), but I think you should clue us in on what you actually do at your job(maybe a "day in the life of" type post), chronicling a typical day of your job.

I dont understand why the Zune team has to "rub elbows" with the music industry people anyway. If the product sucks and continues to do so nobody else is going to buy it and we the early adopters are going to continue to be stuck with a $250 paperweight after microsoft discontinues the thing.
