Stolen Zune Recovered Using Wireless

Saw this post and this thread on Zunerama and decided to take a break from the SXSW blogging to post it. From 'rama:

Zunerama member scoutflyer reports that he was able to track down a friend's stolen Zune that way [by turning on wireless]. The stolen Zune was still in the school building, and by using his own Zune he was able to tell when he got close to the missing player.

Fortunately the perpetrator had not turned wireless off, so the stolen Zune was still announcing its presence to other nearby Zunes.

Congratulations scoutflyer! Welcome (back) to the Social.

Engadget also posted the story, and threw in their seemingly mandated Zune jabs. Win some lose some ;)

lol that reminds me of the guy who tracked down his wife's laptop because of a similiar situation.

segadc

Yeah those were definetly heavy jabs. lol!

RomeoDude

I saw that on Engadget.  The person who stole it probably feels pretty dumb after they were caught...

I wait for three more days and then decide if I will willingly give up my Zune to a thief.

I would never find mine anyway. I don't think I've enabled the Wifi ever.

Diego

What actually is The Social? Even David Caulton doesn't know and suggested only Zune's marketing department knows.

haha...great story.  Another reason to leave that WIFI on.

nighthawkz6

wow..just wow

Diego

This story has to be a hoax. I mean, two Zunes in the same area? No friggin' way! :)

Will

I have never heard of a Zune before but if it has features like that on then could well be worth a look, nice Blog keep it up :)

Diego, it happens all the time :) a friend of mine was on a NYC subway and found 4 other Zune users in range. all of them got to talking about music. Actually, when you find a Zune user w/ wireless on, it's a very exciting moment. :)

Sans Diego - be nicer :)

nighthawkz6

I travel through the subway w/ my Zune but it wastes a lot of battery life so I like to keep it off. I'll try to leave the wireless on one time and see how that goes..

JoshboJenkins

Damn lucky,

mine was stolen a month ago:[

I tried searching for mine like that but i dont think anyone will be dumb enough to even bring mine back to school :/

Ricardo Dawkins

Is the firmware release tomorrow on track or everyone on the Zune team is still drunk ?

Ey, Cesar. Friday have come and gone. Today is Monday and tomorrow is March 20. is the firmware on track ?

Kaiser Machead

Lol is that all you're going to ask. I think firmware updates only go so far if the Marketplace content stays the same. Be patient.

Evan

Awsome!

wish i had my wireless on, my zune was stolen just this last Friday, called the cops but you all know how good law enforcement is on recovering stolen property.

Ethan

I just got my zune stolen last saturday and i was wondering if there was a way possible to go about tracking it. I was reading on how if the wireless is on you can, but since im not sure if it was or not, how do i go about to check and track it? Do i do it myself or call zune to do it or what? please reply a.s.a.p. Thank you much!

Lu-lu

My zune was stolen friday, and i'm worried that i'll never get it back. Since i got it since my birthday, 5 mothns ago. TT_TT But i do hope the wireless myth will work...

my friend, she also have a zune, maybe we can try it out. like the tracking part, how do you know that you're gettign closer? And i also have an idea of putting up a flyer including a reward, but not telling how much of course. So what you guys think of this?

Tyler

Yeah, i got my zune stolen today, and Zune support was pretty helpful, they said that if anyone called in about it, they would be able to tell me who, and where, and the cops could get it or something like that, i have friends with zunes so, i will track mine down (wireless is ALWAYS on), and i submitted a report to the main office, i think the criminal has a smaller chance of gettin' away now. (unless they sell it for drugs, which does happen in my school)
