SXSW: Day 0.5

Greetings from Austin!

Each day I'll post a quick recap of the goings on here at SXSW. Well, here goes:

Amidst heavy rains, a few friends and I headed out to Emo's to see brothers & sisters; explorers club; white denim; black before red; and fouled out. Sweet.

And a funny anecdote from last night: I noticed a friend's Zune headphones last night; he had them in his ears during White Denim; he didn't bring his earplugs. But his headphones weren't in his Zune - they were for a competitor's flash-based MP3 player (the one that doesn't let you select the next song). He just liked the Zune headphones - not sure who wins out there, but folks always tell me that our headphones rock. What do you think?

And today I'll get out w/ my camera, so pictures are coming in the next few posts. Take care everybody!

I also heart the headphones, but in the premiums, couldn't the drop the lows a bit?

TiredFan

*Snicker* Cant help it! Get those pictures ^_^

mc

the headphones are awesome, even those with other mp3 players love them (2 of my friends)

You should sell them seperate

jeff

i got the prems and they are really good, i haven't yet used the stands. the prems do cancel sound out a bit.

lt.milo

how can anyone seriously like headphones of that quality?  Sure they might be better than the ipods, but spend 20 bucks and buy a decent pair of headphones.  Using the included earbuds does not let you get anything out of your zune.

met

I am not sure if the Zune ones are worse than the iPod ones. The one which doesn't allow you to choose the next song rules out pretty much every other player in the market :)

Jonathan

so.... i'm ignorant, which mp3 player won't let you select the next song... and if it's the iPod I'm going to need an example of wtf you are talking about with the zune.

I'm tried an iPod for 30 days last month and now i'm in a 30 day trial of a Zune and I'm looking for all the things that made each special before I decide which to keep so please enlighten me

Try picking the next song on an iPod Shuffle.  It won't happen ;-)

Jonathan

Ahhhhhhh.... thanks :)

I don't even think about the shuffle when I think about an mp3 player...

Re: the iPod Shuffle

To be clear, folks, the Shuffle has two play modes... To Shuffle or Not To Shuffle.

If you select Shuffle, then yes, the iPod will "randomly" select the next song to play. However, if you elect to have the iPod not shuffle, it will play the next song in the playlist *you've defined at home on your computer*. So yes, you *can* pick the next song on the Shuffle. Just program your playlist ahead of time.

Straight from the Apple site:

"Embrace your inner rebel: Flip the shuffle switch to mix up iPod shuffle’s contents. Then flip the switch again to play your hand-picked playlists and albums in the order you synced them from iTunes."

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/features.html

True, it's a sacrifice from on the spot direct access song selection, but there are of course trade offs to designing and building such a small rugged DAP.

Oh. One more thing. Apple is selling refurbished 1GB iPod Nanos for $79, the same price as the Shuffle new.

Well, since I bought the Zune Premium Headphones (which I love by the way), I am able to share the ones that came with my Zune. And when I do, people say that why didn't I like them because they feel way much better than (ahem) the iPod's.

I've been couped up in the blogger room at the Fader Fort. Good news for us all though, dear blog reader.

The stock headphones are amazing for everyday listeners but they're worthless to me. If you're like me and enjoy high bitrate music, you usually use 3rd party headphones like Sennheiser, Sony, Skullcandy, etc. The stock zune headphones ( I still have them) are pretty nice from the first day I used them and seem to sound better than the iPod headphones and don't get you noticed.

I think the Zune headphones will be iconic in some way because of the silver magnetic plated part on the headphones. I usually notice people have Zune's when I see their headphones.

Brooke

I like the zune headphones, but i think that the iPod headphones are much more comfortable.
