What a week! The Zune Markeplace editorial team got featured in the Seattle P-I. Readers expressed their firmware thoughts, then expressed their 1.3 update thoughts; NPD January numbers came out, I apologized to NYC; and a few people won the photo contest. But MP3 Friday (my most-read post) continues on:

Ok folks! Enjoy the music, thanks for commenting this week, and have a great weekend!

great, now i have music to cook Arepas tommorow morning! woot!

You know what I am wondering, when are we going to be able to change the font color and font highlight color on the main menu??? Also when are they going to put out the firmware update so we can enable or disable the gradient on the main menu! It messes up my black backgrounds.

Hey Cesar my cousin wants a Zune and is saving for one. But my Brother wants to lead him to the dark side with the ipod and pus the zune down for everything. Can you please give me some points to show him which is better?

Sean,

Check out jlb's post towards the end of this thread. It might help you point out which is better for him.  ;-)

sean, I would say the best thing you can probably do is to show your cousin your Zune, let him play with it. most people I talk to who see and hold Zune like it and say something to the effect of "wow, it's not as bad as the internet says"  ;)

As far as my two favorite things about Zune - you can plug Zune into an unlimited number of windows machines and sync their music. you can also easily get music from your Zune back onto your machine. awesome awesome feature for music junkies like me. ok man, take care :)

Cesar, is this true that Apple has patent your/my Zune doubleshot feature?  How can this happen?

Engadget.."is unique, and the closest thing to an iconic aesthetic the Zune has right now. Potentially unfortunately for Microsoft, three days ago Apple was granted patent 20070048470, for "Housing of an electronic device formed by doubleshot injection molding".

Thanks guys. Oh and i have shown it to him but he's the type of person who wants to know the gritty facts about almost any device and why he should pick it up over the other. He says he wants one now but my bro is slowly trying to get him to change his mind. (I really want him to get one so then i can check out the wireless feature on the Zune.

John, to be clear, Apple filed for that patent back in 2005, and has been using "doubleshot injection molding" even prior to that time.

Also, the filing you mention hasn't necessarily even been granted yet. It's a patent application. Engadget is mistaken in saying Apple has been *granted* a patent on doubleshot injection molding.

Thanks Zuneless.  Engadget has since posted an update that states they don't know if has been granted or not.  However they do make a point that this represents the only published patent with USPTO for the doubleshot plastic molding process.  In any case, Microsoft needs to protect its designs.

I think the point is, it's not Microsoft's "design".

Apple filed for the patent almost two years before Microsoft started using the doubleshot process on the Zune, and it appears that Apple was using the doubleshot process themselves for several years prior to their own patent filing.

Hey there, appreciate the questions on this topic, but our legal group doesn’t let us comment on the patent applications of other companies :)

Can anyone see the aquarium drunkard links listed by Cesar (i.e. Patti Smith, Ryan Adams, and Galaxie 500)?
