On behalf of the Zune team at Microsoft, I’d like to issue an apology to the residents of Ludlow Street (between Stanton and Houston) for the loud noise at 3:00 AM last Sunday (24 Feb). For what it’s worth, this was not a planned or Zune-sanctioned PR event, a stunt, or any intentional marketing activity.  And we’ve taken steps to make sure this won’t happen again. To those folks woken up by the sounds of the vehicle, we apologize.

i didnt hear anything :P

Wow well it wasn't your fault but it probably means a lot to the locals for saying sorry.

You know what is irritating, is that Microsoft (even though this wasn't planned) develops a product that a people actually enjoy (well a few of us) and they try to shake that "suit" image, and they screw that up.

With all the potential with this device designed for the consumer, and you leave us out of the development. We don't know when the new firmware updates will be, we don't know what they will do, and we have no email or anything to give feedback (unless im missing something, nothing on the official Zune site, or this one)

Do we get SideShow on the Zune? Wireless syncing? Podcast support? a clock? Who knows.... but we can get a SUV wake us up at 3am!

(I just now saw under the "aboutAdmin" an email for Zune, why was this so hard? Do you guys get anything about basic customer service? No EMAIL US on the front page, etc. This is what gets annoying about MS, find a product you like, and you can't even get in touch to freakin compliment them on it.

Um, why don't you submit your feedback here?

if it were the iPod mobile or something, they don't say anything.

If anything this stunt created some much needed publicity for the Zune.

My #1 feature request would be SideShow gadgets!

This is my confused face.

Cesar, your post says a lot about the Zune team; thanks for standing up to it even though it wasn't sanctioned behavior. Something woke me up that night here in the northwest, and I'm sure it was that Zune SUV. :)

I have to take exception to the complaints about lack of access to the Zune team. Cesar's blog has his email address, in addition to the opportunity for you to post comments, plus I believe that Cesar blogs about everything that he's allowed to. Obviously, he has to keep his posts in line with what the company's ready to reveal.

So c'mon, I don't see anything comparable to any of those three communication methods from TOMP (That Other Music Player). Cut the guy a break.

was it Damian?

"And we’ve taken steps to make sure this won’t happen again." So it had nothing to do with you, but you're going to make sure it doesn't happen again? If you can do something to make sure it doesn't happen again, that very well means that it had something to do with the team.

@ vstra,

Since it was something revolving around the "Zune" name they have all the right to make sure it doesn't happen again.  Someone can't abuse the name without consequences.  Plus Rogue ad agencies happen, and then get fired.

@Ricardo Dawkins -

Don't be paranoid. Saying that people would not be upset if it were Apple doing it sounds as weak as when conservatives bray about the 'liberal media.'

There's no conspiracy to give one company or product more slack than another. This was a boneheaded stunt, and it's nice that Cesar here apologized, but it's really the job of the morons in the truck to apologize.

Unfortunately, the people who live on Ludlow aren't going to care. They're just going to remember that some Zune thing woke them up in the middle of the night. For many of them, this may be the first time they ever heard of Zune, and now they associate it with jerks. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Uh actually the people on Ludlow do care as evidenced by the video on the internet.  Also this may not have been sanctioned but it was allowed to happen. Trust me when I tell you that in corporate jargon "We didn't sanction this" could easily be code for "Boy that blow up in our faces.  Spin, Spin, Spin."  The whole Zune team was in New York and a bunch of them were at Max Fish that night.  So by my math; it may not have been sanctioned but a whole bunch of you didn't stop it either.  Not a big difference between support of an idea or staying silent about a bad idea.

so wtf happened exactly??!!

Its working guys! Good job. Still I would never buy into that piece of junk. Love the brown though ; )...and try to be a little bit more original.

What a week! The Zune Markeplace editorial team got featured in the Seattle P-I. Readers expressed their

I'm not buying it.  I ask you, what's more plausible: This was the work of a lone Zune vigilante or this was the work of a behemoth company that seriously misjudged its target market?

Another (unsanctioned, of course) marketing f***-up by the Zunesters.

They say any publicity is good publicity, but not if it's ALL bad.  Makes me wonder how many more bone-headed publicity stunts are on the drawing board.  Maybe MS should stick with enterprise apps and leave cool to -um- someone else.  Watching MS trying to be hip is as awkward as seeing your best friend's dad dance drunk at a wedding.
