After writing a scathing article ("It's not cool and never will be"), about Zune, Wired News' Leander Kahney takes a fresh look. After spending time with Zune, both the software and the device, he posts a balanced review. But it comes out pretty positive. About the device UI, he writes:
The Zune's interface impressed me the most: It's much slicker and easier to use than the iPod's.
I don't say this lightly. I'm a big fan of Apple's interface design -- and I'm often exasperated by Microsoft's -- but I prefer the way you choose songs on the Zune.
And about the software, he writes:
Of course, it's not all roses. The Zune desktop software crashed right after installation and I had to restart. Back up and running, the sign-in procedure was long-winded and tedious -- typical Microsoft. But since then, the software has worked very well.
Kahney also takes a step back and looks at Zune reviews at the meta-level. I noticed a similar thing a few days ago.
The Zune is taking a good kicking in the press, but the criticism -- especially from the Mac web -- seems knee-jerk and defensive.
Overall a solid, informative and balanced review - not "knee-jerk and defensive." Also, Paul Thurrot (of Paul Thurrot's Supersite for Windows) takes another look at Zune, and then does a podcast with This Week in Tech and gives an interesting perspective about Zune and our long-term plans.
So I wanted to ask you, dear blog reader. While I'm *guessing* you haven't found another Zune user with whom you can share songs/pictures - takes time - I'm sure you've shown it to your friends. You know, being the early adopters that you are. So when you show your Zune device to your folks, do they generally like it? What do they say?
I'll start: people like my Zune (but they know I'm in marketing, so maybe they're just being nice ;)
