Tip: Media Center Recorded Content on Zune (and a favor granted)

Both David and Bill from the Zune team (high-five!) post how to take your Media Center recorded content and load it onto your Zune. Having just watched some episodes of The Office on my Zune, I *highly* recommend this.

Other than the fact that Zune comes with a built-in FM tuner, this next part of the post his very little to do with Zune. Albeit it is related to music: one of our friends and regular contributors, Bryant is starting a petition to get his favorite radio station in Miami (93 Rock) to play his favorite band (Blink 182). He even has a myspace group! In an email to me, he writes:

Hi. My name is Bryant. I have posted a few times on your blog. I'll jsut get to the point.

I am from Miami and our old rock station was shut down at the begining of the year. There is a new station now called South Floridas 93 Rock.

This new station plays a lot of good music but not Blink-182. The band (as you may or may not know) broke up last year and it looks like they are gone forever. They are not being played often (if at all) on any station down here. I have started an online petition to try and convice 93 Rock to air Blink songs. I would really appreciate it if you would make a post on your site about it asking South Floridians to sign the petition. Thanks a lot.

Here is the petition URL

http://www.petitiononline.com/b182pet/petition.html

and I started a little MySpace group to get people interested http://www.myspace.com/blink182on93rock

If you're in S. Florida, I would encourage you to sign the petition, and if you're on the myspaces, to join the group! Heck, sign up even if you're not. I did.

Gaaaaplessss playyybaaack.

down low too slow

yo i hope you are trying to be funny with all of these high fives, in a lame Borat kinda way, or else I might start beginning to suspect that being an aspy like Billy and Ballsy is a prereq to getting a job at Seattle

Dustin Twiggs

They're likely not playing them because no record execs are paying the station blood money behind closed doors anymore. The radio stations are so crooked they're not going to play it unless someone pays them too.

Bryant

Cesar, thanks a whole bunch, man. This really means a lot to a lot of people.

Rhett, btw, I hear you. Thanks :)

If you have to post a GUIDE for how to get MCE stuff on your Zune, you guys have failed. You realize that, right? Anything that requires a guide, and is linked to on your blog is:

1) something people obviously really want to do

2) something that you haven't made nearly simple enough.

John in S.Florida

I'm less inclined to go through hoops to get recorded content on Zune.  Thats cool occassionaly but I would use Zune and Media Center alot more if I could stream content.

Before it becomes a novelty, please add media extender capabilities to portable Zune!

[Followup to BUG BUG BUG message]

The Zune Device does expire MarketPlace songs. I saw my first "This item has expired" dialog today. Only thing is that today is 14 days after my 14-Day Zune Pass expired. The Zune software stopped downloads on Day 14 and stopped letting me play songs on my computer but I could still sync them to my Zune Device and play them till today ...

Has anyone else seen this yet?

Do you get this same message when your share songs using as well? I have yet to share songs using WiFi ...

Cesar: Thanks for listening. This blog has been very helpful. Keep up the good work.

H

Ours continued to play on the Zune but not the PC after 14 days.  Then we didi the firmware upgrade and the songs were locked out and the marketplace site could not load.  Tech supprt has been no help (after and hour of try this reboot).  The bug is in the pc side of the system.  Also for those thikinf to buy the car kit, don't, it sucks.  IF you Zune plugged into the lighter socket is not line of sight through the window then the radio will not lock on.

Monk

I got my first "This item has expired" today also. It really sucks. Do I have to renew my Zune Pass? Because I was operating on the 14 Day Trial.

admin

monk, you must have been using the 14-day trial subscription and then had it expire, right? That's why the content no longer plays. I think you should renew your zune pass.

Harrison

I have the Zune Subscription and I still get the error message.  What a waste of 250$

Lemonjuice77

My zune today just said "this item has expired.  Why does it do that?  Is it because the 14 day pass was a trial and not the real thing?  This sucks.

TibbyZunedOut

I was under the impression that you wouldn't be able to download anymore after the 14 day subscription ended I didn't realize the dang thing expired on your player too!!!  I am sooo peeved!! How can so many of us not know that or misunderstand that? Or was it not explained well...hhmmmm

mike

that happened to me too!!!!!! how can i get my 500 SONGS BACK!!!!

admin

well you could always renew your subscription :)

Unhappy with this Xmas present

My 14 day passed expired a few weeks ago.  Of course, like everyone else, I couldn't play my songs on my pc.  But now, I get the "item has expired" message on my Zune.

You mean to tell me we have to keep the subscription just to keep the songs we have already downloaded?  This is really bad business, not to mention ridiculous.  So basically, the Zune is useless withouth the subscription?  This in no way encourages anyone to keep the subscription.  All this will do is lose customers and gain negative reviews.

Manitou

So let me get this straight.  Several of you thought for one low monthly price you could download as many songs as possible and then KEEP them forever.  I have to admit I can't blame the Zune team for this.  It is a SUBSCRIPTION service.  No more subscription, no more service.

Manitou

And to address the last comment from 'Unhappy,' no the Zune is not useless without a Zune Pass.  Without a pass it just means you have to play music you actually own.

Kayla.

That is very ridiculous.

First you pay over $250 for the device.

You get a free 14-day pass, and you can't even keep the songs you downloaded within that period of time?

Well, that's Microsoft for you I guess.

I guess I will just have to illegally download music from Limewire and put it on there...

I wish I didn't have to though.

Sugarbaby

I have a full subscription to the Zune "Marketplace" I paid my fees and now half of my downloads don't play. "This item has expired" Why are my songs not playing if I already paid the monthly fees? So will this continue to happen or do I have to download all the songs again??

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

khm3r

I bought a song and it expired!  BOUGHT IT WITH MY POINTS!  Paid for it and it still says that!  What  can I do to stop that?!

itousseyz

I'm just wondering, does anybody know if I buy a Zune Pass from Microsoft, will the songs expire after I quit? Or is this all because you had the trial?

Music Mus3

I though that if you didn't take action to cancel your Zune Pass subscription, then u would still be charged the $15 a month. I looked over my account info on the zune.net site and it says my current subscription level is - Zune Pass: 1 month. I don't understand why all my songs are expired, I really don;t want to re-download!! I hope this isn't a scam to get me to pay for the 3-month price.

I'm currently overseas on a vacation, but I didn't think that had anything to do with it. I haven't logged onto the Zune Marketplace for awhile, but I'm still paying for the subscription!!!! What gives?

Justa Guess

My understanding is that you have to sync up your zune by logging into the service every few days ( I think it's 15 days) to download new certificates for the music you have, which basically say you can play it another X days more.  This is why the people with the 14 day trial could play music a bit longer, they had the certs that said they could.  If you don't sync your zune the certs expire and you can't play anything that wasn't purchased.

But back to the real topic, this is a lame way to need to move content to the Zune.  I should have just used my Ipod and not bought Vista Home premium, opting for a Linux variant with I think the app is Myth (FREE) which would not have required me to buy a new pc so that the hardware could keep up with Vista demands.  I was very excited about the zune and Vista and both have disappointed me greatly in this area.  I used to be a gung-ho MS lapdog, evangelizing everything they did to anyone who'd listen, but I tried to play 2 legal dvd rentals from Blockbuster on my home computers (I also have a Vista Ultimate machine with fully compatible HDCP hardware from end to end including my monitor) and got a DRM error!  Not a HD dvd or blue-ray, just a nice simple dvd like hundreds of other dvd's I've played over my lifetime....  Way to stop people from being legal MS/Hollywood.  It probably had to do with the fact that I wouldn't allow them to install that stupid intervideo spyware on my systems.  I wish I had not kept the zune thinking they would eventually offer the sync from media center, I wish I had not bought vista media center (I had XP 2005 media center but didn't really get into PVR recordings until Vista) and found out that the tv-guide tells my pc what it can and can't let me do with a file (like watching in my bedroom on my pc rather than on the Living Room Media Center) I wish that I hadn't bought a new Wireless N router to support all of the recorded tv I thought I'd be watching but can't and I'd really wish they'd fix all of this crap so I can go back to being a happy MS consumer.  As it stands now, Vista is my last MS OS, and I will be moving to Linux if they keep finding ways to alienate me, the legitimate customer, trying to protect content from people who see it as a challenge to break the protection.  People who are going to do that are going to do it, and customers are the only ones who suffer.  I don't understand why they seem to think I should have less rights with my video on this portable device or PVR than I did with the previous generation (aka Video Cassettes).

Man, it may be time to go back to old technology that works like I expect it to. I wonder what I did with that old VHS player/recorder???
