NickStarr.com: An Interesting Experiment

Note: I know that some readers of this blog swore a blood oath against Microsoft in the 12th century. This post is not so much for you. . . or is it!?

Reading a little bit about Zune on the internets today, I came across something interesting. A blogger* out there named Nick Starr wants to give Zune a fair and balanced review, after using it exclusively for one month.

And he's asking his readers to donate half of the cost:

I’m going to give up any and all use of my iPods for an entire month and use the Zune exclusively, even my cute little new shuffle.

During the month, I will give updates about features that I find useful and ones that annoy me. At the end, I will write an entire Ars Technica style’d review of the Zune covering EVERYTHING and anything about it. . .

Here’s what I’m proposing. I’ve installed an Amazon gift link over on the right hand sidebar. Once I get 1/2 the cost of the Zune in donations, I will pitch in with the other half and make the purchase. That means I need $125 in donations, otherwise this thing isn’t going to fly.

The catch: he's considered by many to be an iFanboy, but one who'll be willing to write a balanced review:

I’d like to give the Zune a fair shot. I know I’m considered to be quite the Apple fan boy, but I also can stand back and look objectively at something to provide a fair and balanced review of it.

It's a really cool idea. Heck, I'm actually so interested in the results of this that I've got 1/2 a mind to just send him my own personal Zune player. Anyways, I've said before that I (we) love feedback. So I'm really interested to see how this develops.

*To head off any speculation/accusation right away, no-one, including me, from Microsoft has ever spoken with Mr. Starr. The idea to raise money for a Zune is entirely his own. I'm posting this on my blog because I think it's interesting.

Until Nick is done, here's a fair and factual comparison of the Zune at mindsplice.com. If anything is incorrect or missing, send me a comment.

Cesar, if you want some feedback it lists a few feature pros and cons.

RomeoDude

I think the Zune is in an early stage.  It needs a "sequel" to add some left out features, such as games or other features I'm sure you've read about just about everywhere on the net.  Even though I don't have a Zune, from what I've seen in the store displays, it's one of the first portable media players to compete with the iPod for number one spot.

Off topic, but I believe we found a fix for all the people (myself included) who couldn't get album art to appear on the Zune itself.

May want to pass this on to your support people until the software is fixed, because from what I've heard the people who call support get a runaround of reinstalling software, resetting the device, etc. until finally being bumped up to level 2 where someone acknowledges it's a known issue and they don't have a fix right now.  Some people are being told to exchange it as well, which I'm sure is as much of a headache for you as it is for them.

What DRM has to do with album art is beyond me, but it worked for me anyway.  I had no album art on the device and now I have all of it.  Thought you people would like to know.

I've been a Zune owner since launch day, which next week will be a month now and I've already written a fair and balanced review on the Zune, plus pointed to why I feel the critics of it are wrong out there.

I also got into a debate with Andy Ihnatko -- the reviewer from the Chicago Times-Sun -- who slashed and burned on the Zune.

In our family we also own a 5g iPod (black), an older Creative MP3 player and a Sirius Stiletto 100.

Strangely, nary a single Zune blog or Zune fansite has given me the time of day. At least that I've seen to date.

Hmm ...

Hey Cesar, just wanted to let you and the team know we have a new hardware/software problems post up. Not for bashing or anything, just a list of problems we have noticed with the zune software, zune player, etc. Most of which are firmware-updgradable/fixable ;) *wink* *wink*

Nick - you should add under the "Buying Media" section that the Zune Marketplace does not sell Audio Books.

MindSplice

TDavid,

In a fair and balanced review, I'd think you wouldn't delete a comment that pointed out factual inaccuracies and biased opinions - it was the one from MindSplice. Luckily, I save every comment I post to my local disk - I'll post it for you again. If it a mysterious software glitch deletes it again perhaps I could post it here.

Take Care,

Rhett

Cesar, I think this guy just wants a Zune and is looking for a way to get a discount.

Maybe if he said he would donate the device to charity or give it away to a kids hospitol or something at the end of the month it would be interesting. Othwise, its just more apple nonsense

Besiseds if anyone wants a fair review they need only listen to ME! Ha-Ha!

Rhett

That Mindsplice comparison has a bunch of inaccurate info. You might want to fact check a lot of that and clean up the errors.

TDavid

Palmer - A few things wrong with your comment to point out below.

1) you didn't point out any factual inaccuracies in my review that I could see. You gave your opinion on my opinion, which is fine. That's what the web is about :)

2) Where is my bias? We own both an iPod and a Zune in our house (and a Sirius Stiletto 100 as pointed out above). We are a platform agnostic household. I don't work for Microsoft or Apple. We bought both the Zune with our own money, it wasn't a gift or a free loaner copy.

Can't be any less bias than this, I would think :)

3) Nobody "deleted" your comment.

Every first comment made at our site is held in moderation (anti-spam protection) which is explained in our commenting policy at makeyougohmm.com/comments (and linked on every post).

We receive over a 1,000 comments every day so my apologies that you didn't see your comment right away and assumed it was deleted. It wasn't, it was just waiting for somebody to look at it and make sure that it met the comment rules of the site (which are linked near the comment form of each post). Again, that has nothing to do with my review being fair and balanced, that has to do with you following the site rules.

Your comments will passthru without moderation now that I approved it as long as it isn't flagged for anything else in the comments rules and I responded to your comment so fire away. Your duplicate comment however wasn't approved :)

We do sleep, you know :)

4) Your mindsplice comparison has inaccurate info according to Rhett above. Hmm ...

Ahd Child

Errrr, I want to write a fair and balanced review also. Should I post a link for people to donate to my ZUne fund? :)

MindSplice

Rhett,

I've checked my info and have no problem correcting inaccuracies or erasing opinions. I didn't get a specific email or comment from you pointing out the specifics. Please let me know what's inaccurate.

Regards,

Palmer

I'd gladly test out the device if sent one. I'd even send it back or give it to a charitable organization of the senders picking. (Said charitable organization can be me ;) )

I'm in the process of hunting for a new mp3 player, and the Zune is on my list of ones to check out. So, I downloaded the Zune software and spend some time playing with it. My review can be found here: http://nutbolt.blogspot.com/2006/12/zune-software-hands-on.html

As a note, I used to have a 3rd gen iPod, but it's hard drive died about a year ago.

I read the full re-purposed review on the Foxnews site (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,233797,00.html) and thought that was the best so far.  I do plan on getting one eventually (it's a personal xmas present that unfortunately is going in the post-xmas budget, at least the price is dropping ...$233 best I've found so far).

In that review I found the 'Point-Buy-System' and 'Something To Think About' sections particularly interesting.   Would be nice to see some of those ideas come to light if you're paying attention Cesar...   It took WMP until version 11 to really reach a 'happy' place.  Microsoft will miss the boat on this one if it takes that many revs to do the same here.

P.S.  I still haven't found out if you can display lyrics on the Zune like you can on the iPod if they're in the mp3 tags.  It was even news to the young kid at Best Buy in that section that you could display lyrics on the iPod.  Guess it's a feature not many must use.  You just need to have some kids around your house butchering lyrics to care...

Dan H

Ah, the lyrics. I have lyrics for a lot of my favorite artists and I find that I access them quite frequently when listening to music while I'm traveling. Being stuck on a plane gives me time to relax with my music and I tend to explore the music a bit more, including checking out the lyrics on my iPod as I listen to the tunes.

Callidus

pfft dont send HIM a zune.  Send ME a zune.

Gizmodo

We've had a lot of accusations that we are Zune fanboys, cast with far more venom than the former iPod fanboy finger pointing. Why do I believe in our Zune coverage? Because the Zune is approaching the market with a...
