Zune Reviewed on Foxn. . . Extremetech

So yesterday was my birthday. I'm 28.

In more important news, check this out. A regular contributor to this blog's comments, Jason Cross reviews Zune: first for extremetech, then repurposed at Foxnews. I actually agree with Jason's comment - it's one of the better Zune reviews on the web.

Not that it's excessively positive ("In a boneheaded move of epic proportions, the Zune software does not install on Windows Vista."), but it is excessively thorough - kudos to Jason for spending time with Zune and writing an informed, detailed review.

Note: I actually totally read the review back when he posted it a few weeks ago, but didn't link to it.

<Edit: focused on the Extremetech part, per Jason's request

Happy birthday Cesar.

I didn't read the Foxnews site as I am not a memeber of the Klan but I checked out the extremetech review adn was pleasantly surprised.  This is what I talk about when I say objective reviewing, he's clearly highlighted what the Zune doesn't do, what he thinks it should do and what he thinks it does well.  From that I am able to discern whehter I want to buy one - unlike the iBoy MS bashing that has generally occurred.  I am still getting one - why?  because every one of those problems/missing features can be added with firmware or software updates.  You got the hardware right which is key.  Also I just got a load of dollars for my trip and I worked out that it's consting my barely over 130 notes to get a 30GB DAP, which over here is a steal!

The best part of the review is when the author explains how the Zune UI is working. When you played with the Zune for few days, you know that the Zune UI is "very" good.

Happy birthday!!

Hey, thanks for the plug Cesar! We love you! :P

If anyone wants to read the review, I'd prefer you do it at ExtremeTech. Foxnews just licenses some technology content from Ziff Davis, that's how it ended up there. I mean, good on them to pick my review and all, but my hard work actually benefits the company that pays my paycheck when you come to our site, not theirs. ;)

As Matt said above, there's not a single problem with the Zune that can't be fixed in firmware or PC software updates. The problem is, it really does need to address some of those problems and missing features, and in a hurry. That onus is on MS, and I'd really love the company to get a little more vocal about what the current Zune models are going to be updated to do.

Hi there! This is a little bit of a tangent but I was wondering if Jason or anyone else came across this issue I keep having with the Zune's software. I figured I'd ask since it seemed from the review that you spent quite a bit of time with the Zune.

I use mp3's ripped from CD's and keep running into this issue where the tags will be recognized correctly on the software and on the Zune by browsing via the software but when viewing through the Zune, the tracks will be split up into two identical abums instead of being correctly grouped together. I have tried reinstalling and/or updating the tags via both 3rd party and Zune software as well as reformatting the device, so everything should be ok.

I agree that the Zune is great other than a couple of software issues and am looking forward to the next few updates/patches. Anyway, good review. I couldn't agree more about the lack of podcasting support.

Fantastic review, though one important overlooked aspect is lack of distribution in other markets (Europe, Canada, Asia, etc). If it is true that MS Zune is trying to compete with Apple IPod, not lauching it worldwide as it was done with XBOX is a marketing blunder, to say the least, that needs to be adressed.

By the way, is it really true that I can use the zune tag and Zune pass on five computers and two Zunes?
