Fridays are for Fun (and Music)

What's that? You want some MP3s for your Zune? Ok, well, I'm happy to oblige. Welcome to the first edition* of MP3 Friday. I share. . . because I care.

You may have noticed that I have a group list of links for "the cool kids" on the right hand side. These are MP3 blogs, where I find out about new music. Each Friday,* I'm going to try to post my favorites from the week. I like different genres of music (lots) so I'll post a variety. Ok, here goes:

Enjoy!

In other news, I noticed today on Prefix mag that 50 Cent mentioned that Microsoft is coming out with a music player. Sweet! He didn't mention the Zune name specifically, but iPod got a specific mention. And he was talking about downloads and how that might result in fewer sales of his upcoming album.

But he does mention that we have a player! Sweet! So. . . in true blogger fashion, I'm taking a quote blatantly out of context:

“. . . And when I’m getting ready to go into this project, considering that Apple is selling millions of iPods and Microsoft is coming out with competing products. . . "

Anyways, hope you like the music!! High-five!!

*This might be the first and only edition of MP3 Friday, btw. No telling how some blog posts go. If you know another site that posts music, and want me to add it to the cool kids list - must be label-sanctioned - drop a comment.

Hey Cesar,

This is a great idea! Thanks for the links. I hope you can continue this feature.

Cut Chemist is the sh!t and I dig their Chemistry book too.

Speaking of genre's... I have two bones to pick with the Zune Marketplace.

1.) The genre's are horrible!

a.) There's little to no sub-genre information.  Where's the sub-genre's like Shoegazer, Lo-Fi, etc etc.  Take a look at Rhapsody for how to handle this.

b.) Artists and albums are often listed under several genre's that quite often don't fit!  Example, the genre Guitar Rock contains Jennifer Lopez, Depeche Mode, Christina Aguilera, Ani Difranco, and Michael Jackson..  None of these come to mind when I think Guitar Rock.

c.) Some genre's cover too much.  Indie/Modern Rock sounds like two peas in a pod.  But not when Nickelback, U2, The Rolling Stones, and Pearl Jam are all listed as Modern Rock.  It becomes difficult to find any indie artists in the list.  This is an example of a genre that needs to be split apart.

2.) Where are the album / artist recommendations and staff picks?

a.) The Zune tracks my play count.  The marketplace should know what I like and give possible recommendations.  This feature seems like a no brainer to me.

b.) Staff picks are great.  Have the staffers write a small blurb about the album.  This should be in the Marketplace, not a blog.  (no offense)

This might all sound like a nitpick but it makes finding music difficult.  Especially if I find a new sound I like, it'd be nice to see other artists within that sub-genre.

Umm.. are those Cut Chemist tracks on the MOKB site legal?  They're right off the album.  Considering that the guy is talking about vinyl rips, I don't get why you link to him.  Considering how anal the Zune is about copy protection for wireless transfers, isn't it weird that you're promoting (at best) gray market mp3 transfers?  Even more befuddling because he's being pimped by iPod. (should note that I own and enjoy thoroughly the new Cut Chemist album, and have alot of his earlier work)

If you want to get closer to "white market", check out the site for My Way My Love, http://www.mywaymylove.com , a Tokyo noise/pop (?) band.  The audio section has links that pop up a Quick Time player, but you can just view source to get the path to the MP3s.  If you like them, buy an album!  Europe tour just ended, but they'll be back and to the US again soon.
