Zune Details Revealed

(Heads up; this is a long post I highlighted some things to make it a little bit easier to read)

Since we started the Zune project, and I started this blog, I’ve been talking about community, about bringing a social aspect to music and entertainment. Zune is the next step in connected entertainment. With Xbox Live, we created a world of connected gamers.  With Zune, we’re creating a world of connected music fans. Zune is the next step in the space we're calling "connected entertainment." What's connected entertainment? Take MySpace, YouTube, Xbox Live, and every cool record store on the planet. Then add 1000 of your closest friends, and make it all accessible though a little device in your pocket.  That’s what we’re doing with Zune.

Brian said it last week “When we get specific on features and things that we're doing, you'll see a lot of emphasis on community, on a shared type of experience.” Well, dear blog readers, it's time to get specific on the features and the stuff we're doing:

First off. Yes, Zune is a 30 GB Player. You can store up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 100 hours of video. Make playlists on the go and watch a slideshow while you’re listening. But Zune's about being connected - about turning 1000 songs into 1000 recommendations or 1000 different experiences with 10,000 different friends.

And that's where Wireless comes in. You can share full length sample tracks - your favorite song, your own recordings, playlists, or pictures with friends wirelessly - device to device. Once someone sends you the song, then you can listen to it up to three times in three days. If you like a song you hear and want to buy it, you can flag it right on your device to easily find it later. Actually, our very own CrescentDave put it pretty well in a comment on my last post:

It's "Let me share/discover this music that really excites me" . . .The music junkie as entertainer

And lots of folks have asked me about Zune's service - it's called Zune Marketplace. People ask: Is it download or subscription? It's both. Choose to buy a track individually or buy a monthly Zune Pass for a single flat fee for the freedom to download as many songs as you want.

Zune also has a built-in FM Tuner. Advanced tuning capabilities allow you to see the name of the song currently playing on select frequencies local FM radio stations or tune into programming while you’re at your local health club.

Ok, in the interest of not writing a novel, I’m going to direct you to both the press release and the fact sheet.  Also, a new video is at Comingzune.com (some of you noticed that already)

As for the future: Hardware is important in the future, it’s absolutely the amplifier for all of digital experiences. But software is what’s going to make the digital entertainment age run. And software is a place where Microsoft has a good track record. We demonstrated that with Xbox. We’re going to demonstrate it over time with Zune.

For those skeptical about me, this post (with good reason, I work in marketing and I have a huge bias ;), it's all good. I invited some of my favorite MP3/Music blogs to a special preview event at the MS campus last week. You can check their Zune impressions.

Wonderful! Thanks Cesar! Our forums are diving into this now! Harvey http://www.zunerama.com

The band for the new Zune ad: Ashtar Command? I find nothing from them on Rhapsody or iTunes, and can't find a thing on the net except a bunch of stuff for some bizarre ufo-jesus cult. And a google search for the song name, "The Second Coming of the Monkey God" comes up with exactly (1) match. And that's for an article on some atheist website. Hmmm... what's up with all that? I freakin' love that ad, by the way... made me rock, smile, and laugh. Not an easy composite to accomplish. :)

fullTosh

Dude, your link to comingzune.com is pointing to http://stereogum.com/ Please fix it. Great to hear that Zune is so close to release! I'm waiting.

Cesar Menendez

thanks tosh, I fixed. the link. www.comingzune.com

oreixa

Cool! Let's take a look!

Alex

heath: regarding Ashtar Command, check this posting on Richard's blog: http://www.madisonandpine.com/madison_and_pine/2006/09/simon_dawes_and.html There is some info about who's in the group.

Andre P Da Costa

It looks nice, but I still prefer the iPod.

Jim I

Thanks for the update since I couldn't find any live stuff about the media event. The two biggies about the device that I'm still not seeing are price and playsforsure subscription (URGE) compatibility.

Vaibhav Kamath

When are we going to get a preview of the Zune Marketplace? Thanks, Vaibhav

andre

one of the bloggers you mentioned said the thing was 'big and clunky' do you have the size dimensions so i can determine if he was just exaggerating?

avneron

looks great. can't wait to get a chance to play with it. when will it be available?

BB

What about the most important thing: the battery life?

itsgreen

any word on pricing and availability (in europe) or a time frame we can expect such announcements?

Jim I

Purported screencap of the Zune software: http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/14/zune-marketplace-to-keep-your-zune-player-happy/ It looks 80% like URGE. I'm trying to figure out if it's standalone or if that's a WMP skin.

Iceman

I love the device, love the sharing aspect, but I need to know about compatibility. I want to share songs with my girlfriend, she's only got a Mac(can't afford to switch just for mp3s)... the big question... Will it work with OS X?

Emmanuel

Love the FM capability, I listen to NPR religiously, that why I never bought an Ipod. However, the zune just doesn't seem attractive.

Allen

Question: what if I am a musician and I record my own stuff and want to share it? I don't want the '3 listens in 3 days' limitation and there is no place for people to buy it. I just want them to have it and let it spread. Can Zune support that?

Rocko

OK, I have to admit.... It's way cooler than I originally expected. I hope your TV ads are as cool as the one's on the Zune website! :~)

Zunerama

The press release indicates that it will be easy to transfer your existing playlist to Zune - with the caveat "as permitted by the online service from which it was purchased". Hmmm. I like the idea, and hope iTunes cooperates...?!?! http://www.Zunerama.com

Rob Cannon

So, since the FM tuner has song information, can I use that to flag a song that I want to buy in the Zune Marketplace? That would be really cool. Does it have good podcast support with bookmarks?

MthdDirector

Cesar! You're ok. This is very cool stuff! At my house, we are dog-tired of the iPod, and ready for a change. Can I stream from the Zune to my 360?

Matt

What is the price going to be?

Alan

Hmmm...brown??! Just tell me the Razer keyboard's gonna get released. I just love the thought of that set up on my PC.

sdsdv10

Let me repeat a very important question. "What about the most important thing: the battery life?" Way to give almost no tech spec except 30GB HD and 3" screen.

Mike

If this doesn't have built in podcasting (ie RSS) support that that would be HUGE letdown.

Jim I

I looked forward to this announcement, but unfortunately, I'm not convinced Zune can bust the Apple yet. For me, a few things have revolutionized my music listening: 1) Capacity cheap enough to take my whole collection on the go. 2) URGE subscription which frees me to be a music listener/explorer rather than just a music collector Allard is right that subscription will be come to dominate for people who would normally spend more than $10/month on music. But as for the analogy that Zune community will be work just as it does for xbox live... I'm just not buying it. When I'm excited about a new music find and want to share it, I simply e-mail the name/song to ALL my friends. I don't choose who to share it with based on what device they have. With Xbox, the only friends relevant are the ones who have the device and who I can play against so the ecosystem works. But with music, it's more open than that. Another new revolution could happen if iTunes/Zune MarketPlace allow independent artists to cut the record companies completely out of the picture. Then it would be cool if big artists followed and left the big boys with the consequences of their choice to sit out of online distribution for so long. Of course that won't be soon given the collusion of ClearChannel, Ticketmaster, and the record companies. But that giant will fall some day. BTW the new bird ad is outstanding!

SteveP

Does Zune do homebrew apps? Not expecting a do-it-all MicroPC or PDA, but I wish for such a device to have basic widgets/gizmos/games.

Mark Barton

Will it record FM?

Dodge

I was told that the battery life is about 12 hours.

Jim I

This illustrates my point of "community" problems for a closed framework. From 3Hive: "The drawback to the sharing function is that ALL MP3s get chained with DRM. So that favorite new song your friend downloaded from 3hive and Zuned over to you, even though the band wants you to have it no strings attached, you only have three plays/days to enjoy it. After that, you'll have to go download it yourself."

Chris

i have to agree if its originally an un-drm'd file the 3 for 3 really needs to be removed if its undrm'd then its officially MY FILE and i can do with it as i please.... On top of that you guys really need to think of after christmas really need to consider releasing a 80gb edition... i know kinda why microsoft didnt do it in this Zune device, because THIS ISNT THE VIDEO ZUNE. YA its got a big screen and can play videos but its not the official Zune Video, thats coming down the line... And that will most likely have the 100gb drive :) I HOPE The issue is microsoft needs to keep that video zune ahead of apple to really cut their throat :) And still keep the price in check... 12 hours of mp3 playback would be wicked i really hope we get a good 6 or so hours of video :) One thing i really really really hope microsoft is listening to is Xbox360 dashboards Media pane really needs to get a Zune Marketplace for downloading music :) thats cross linked with the Zune device, hence "CONNECTED"

Jason Cross

I'm looking at the linked blogs, and reading this one, and the Zune fact sheet, and not a single word about podcasts (or "blogcasts" or any other name for the same thing). What's the story? Good podcast and video podcast support seems like the very first thing a "community focused" player would have to get right. I have about a million questions about little details, but more than any other, the podcast question needs an answer. Will the Zune software support podcasts from the start (meaning, will accept RSS feeds and download 'em)? Will it have its own podcast directory? How's that whole aspect going to work?

RomeoDude

Sounds cool!!! By the way, I LOVE the new comingzune.com. The new video is pretty funny and the rest of the site is shaping nicely :).

DeaconBlade 360

Anything on supporting acc tracks?

Jim I

So it appears that Microsoft is just producing ANOTHER closed system like iTunes. URGE and other PlaysForSure services appear to be excluded from Zune. It's too bad, because the direction of Microsoft Windows Player 11/URGE is really superior to iTunes and it's still in BETA. They should put their money behind that effort and easing people's transition to subscriptions with really cool players. It looks like I'll be buying something else with bigger storage and value to support my subscription. 1+ on the podcasting comments.

ale

Cesar, good work. I have a couple of Qs... What other uses (beside Zune2Zune) will Wifi have ( like browsing from Zune/ connecting to a home network , 3rd party apps??? ) and #2: How is the sharing in other stuff besides DRMed music ( ripped CDs or home videos) will that kind of thing work?

Mind Booster Noori

Doing a market lockout isn't very smart if you want to attract iPod users to Zune. For instance, making Comingzune.com to use Flash 8 is making it unavailable to Linux users. So they'll just keep using their iPod. And if you're one of those still thinking that the percentage on Linux users is despisable, well... think again: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&client=mozilla&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aunofficial&q=ipod+%2B+linux&btnG=Search

Michael Gannotti

I want my Zune!! :-)

SportsUnit

Podcasts? 360 Integration? Media Center Integration? Cell Phone Integration? Music Videos ... resolution, cataglog? Online locker? Today leaves me with more questions than answers. Ok... I'm done.

Ali

I have, at the moment, a Microsoft Portable Media Center (Samsung model) which syncs lovely with my Media Center PC, including television. Is the televsion format that media center uses supported on Zune?? That would be the tipping point for me. Thanks :) Great stuff! Ali

Georg

I do not really see the reason to switch from an iPod to the Zune if it does not have Podcasting-Features. Microsofts talks loud about all these networking features, but doesn't that include user generated content? Cesar, could you please clarify this? Thanks and greetings from Austria BTW: When will it come to Europe?

Dan H

According to Billboard, the batter life is 12 hours with no wi-fi usage. "One of the concerns of the WiFi connection is its impact on battery life. With the WiFi function turned off, the device will have 12 hours of continuous music playing time, according to MSFT officials. They did not provide figures for when the WiFi function is on, but confirmed it would be less." Full article here: http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003122340

Chris

Nice to see, but as others have pointed out, the hard drive is way too small. I've outgrown my 40Gb NJB3, and I wanted to move to an 80 (or 100) Gb Zune if I'm going to be adding video to the mix. Hopefully there's a Video Zune in the works for next year, because I'd certainly be interested in one.

Felix

I just have one question, will these Microsoft points used in the "Zune Marketplace" be somehow connected to your Xbox Live points, seeing as this would simplify the managing of your MSFT Points a lot easier.

Steve

That new ad on comingzune is freaking sweet.

Woody56292

great info, that white zune would look perfect next to my 360. =) some questions though... 1)"zunecast" support is a must... please tell me you plan to support this. ( it is a firmware feature, so I know you will have it eventually anyways ) 2)battery life? sounds kinda low... hopefully this thing doesn't suffer from the same problems as the gigabeat. 3)zune downloads over xbox live? 4) price, not just the device, but how much is a zune pass? will there be an option avalailable for yearly pass. ( like xbox live ) 5) why no 60gb? just wanted to say.... great job. the zune looks incredible and I love the backrounds. and good job adding aac and h.4 support, I know you aren't the first, but with the popularity of itunes, everyone should include support for that. ( and thanks to the drm stripper, I can listen to itunes-paid songs still in their original aac format. =)

BeerTime

just curious if there have been market studies to see how many people would buy who were already considering buying or would now consider buying if an AM radio was added...i find that id love to take my ipod/zune/etc to sporting events and would love to be able to listen to the pre-game shows and actual game broadcasts.

Alex G

maaan... this is marketed as poorly as every other MS product. Why not just show dinosaurs using an iPod? Effect would be the same - ie no effect what so ever. i dont major in marketing, but even i can point out that: 1. zune.com - wtf is that? 2. microsoft.com - where's zune? 3. comingzune.com - is this related at all? 4. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/zune/default.mspx - this is the big announcement? well done... 5. when? 6. where? 7. and finally, please dont let j. allard give interviews on tech sites... he's a god of a presenter, but answering questions should be left to somebody else... reading him evade and dodge questions about PlayForSure just leaves bad taste in my mouth... http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/14/the-engadget-interview-j-allard-microsoft-corporate-vice-presi/ Finally, you trying to compete with apple, take some lessons from them... at least announce your products when they could be purchased and have your shit ready. But thank you for not desining your package this way... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pXL5_RvGrs

www.ZuneBoards.com and all zune communities are so excited about this! Long live the Zune!

Paul Morriss

Will you do a UK version which supports DAB or RDS on the radio side?

Jeffrey D Baker

How about games? I'm thinking of the XBox360 Live Arcade games that you can download for a few dollars. Most of them are ports of old arcade games and only need 1 or 2 buttons.

Gwizz

Brown?

BM2 Love Angel

Oh, man! I need it. I don't have an iPod and I don't care. All I look forward to now is Zune. Don't let us, "Europeans", waiting for too long after the American's launch, PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

James

Make good hardware, and people will come. Coat everything with sugary DRM goodness, and force users to listen "your" way, because you know better what they want, and prepare to have a seriously hacked product in a week from launch. I for one don't want a Zune. I have higher end hardware tastes from my audio equipment. However, if the hacking community can get a working model up without all the DRM, and it does what it should have done from the start(i.e. PSP, XBOX), I might be interested.

lester magneto

for info on ashtar command, check out their myspace page, definately not a cult.... http://www.myspace.com/ashtarcommand

Sebasthos

Zune is going to be either stillborn, or, as James said, seriously hacked within a week. This 3 for 3-"Feature" is the new height of imbecility. Most people in the target group of Zune have a very clear and low opinion of DRM - and the idea itself to put any file, no matter if it's bought or a self-produced composition, into a DRM-safe shows an astoundingly low amount of common sense. There are cheap MP3-Players with a very high quality and more than enough storage-space out there, perfectly able to play WMV, OGG, MP3 and quite a few other formats, why should people buy something so ill conceived?
