Allow me to introduce you to my old friend: rumor and speculation ;)

There’s been some discussion around here recently about this NY Post story. My take on it: the story confuses the ability to play video with the way users purchase video (they call it the “video store”). And it’s all based on, you guessed it, rumor and speculation. So here’s the official word: we haven’t announced anything with regards to either.

Zune is built around digital entertainment, and we’re doing some interesting things that I think will change the whole landscape. That’s’ the reason I wanted to move to Zune (besides the chance to get one free). What I’m most excited about is the approach we’re taking to community, and the way music - and video - is discovered, discussed, and shared. . . More as I have it.

So, what MS marketing is trying to say is, yes, you will be able to purchase video, but no, you won't be able to play it on Zune. But don't worry, you will get other ways to waste your battery life like wi-fi. Or maybe they just don't have a clue what it's going to be about. It's all about this NEW COOL SHARING THINGY.
“(they call it the “video store”)” And we call it “acquisition of still images connected in series, with voiceover and musical background, that requires payment with credit card, and that don’t play for sure”, otherwise know as AoSICiSwVaMBtRPwCCatdnPfS. Microsoft. We like it our way only.
I have to admit that I'd be dissappointed if I couldn't play the wmv 9 files that I already have stored on my media center pc. However, I understand that a full-blown video store with an intuitive layout takes time. Getting the music storefront right first seems to make more sense. Finding a way to make subscription music easy to find, download, and share is already a huge challenge. Once you add video in there, you have a double the trouble.
What is Matrix? What is Zune? Follow the white rabbit..... :D :D Until the day in which MS announces it with tech specs and so on, we will suffer from buzz and gossip. Hope the announce comes early.
Según informa Gizmodo, que a su vez se hace eco de una noticia de Bloomberg TV que cita al New York Post (vaya con la cadenita de fuentes ), Microsoft habría decidido prescindir de momento de las características de reproducción de video de su rep...
Yep, and we haven't made any announcements re: AoSICiSwVaMBtRPwCCatdnPfS ;) Take that for what it means: everything else is just. . . wait for it. . . wait for it. . . You guessed it again(!) "rumor and speculation" So what I'm telling you, dear blog comment reader, is this: until you hear it from me, dismiss it.
edit for readability: "So sure, the player may still play it, but your "integrated experience" WON'T offer anything to play on that big screen."
"until you hear it from me, dismiss it." Why? You're in marketing and admit you know little of the details. I trust Bloomberg and Michael Gartenberg more than you.
Keep deleting, Cesar; I love the conversation! Let's be clear: if it's a bad rumor, ignore it. If it's fluffy and happy, link to it. We've had weeks of nothing but rumor, and now you tell us not to listen. To top that off, you tell us you want to clarify: you can't tell us anything. Brilliant. I await your deletion.
Nah, I'm not deleting your post TF. I generally like your comments, but I've been clear about deleting the ones that knock the Zune cool kids sites. Please, keep posting about this site all you want.
I admit that one of the major problems with how MS is handling zune is how they're handling getting certain information out about the product and service. Buzz... leaks...buzz...leaks... news of major announcement... small announcement... fans are dissappointed. It would probably be better if they released small bits of meaningful info every now and then. The newspapers and other new web sites appear to have insider information. But, you never really know. Then, when you find out what's really going on, you get a big let down that it's not what you thought. I tried to state as best I could without sounding like I was complaining. I just want to give some constructive criticism from a consumer standpoint. I continue to stand by my view that zune has a few things that it absolutely has to do right and it should be a wonderful product: 1)Obviously, downloading music to the player through wi-fi...without this just forget it. 2)zune live with xbox-live like functionality (friends list, presence, etc.) and a huge itunes-like subscription compatible music library. 3)sharing, both locally and remotely through the service. 4)ways to chat or "hang out" with other users. 5)centrally stored music or a "digital locker" so that your music can be stored remotely and played back using other connected devices such as 360's, media center pc's, and windows mobile devices. Just my 2 cents, if it's worth anything...
Awww! You didnt have to end the speculation hehehe :) - the more rumors and more confused ppl get about Zune, the more buzz it will generate. On the contrary you should have added more fuel to the rumors - it would have made an interesting mix of fact and fiction about Zune! Suyog
Creative Labs has spent years developing the Zen trademark. I can't believe MS is going to step right in it by introducing "Zune," which is just one vowel away from Zen! If MS is going to put their partners' backs against the wall by introducing competing hardware, you'd think they wouldn't steal their trademarks as well!
What is the player going to be called? A zune? The name zune for the service is fine but the player??? "oh hi! I have an iPod!" "oh, really? Those ar lame. I have a zune!" "a Zune??? What is a zune?? IS that microsofts thingy??"" "Yes, the name for the player is lame though" "Lets go buy a mac now!" "Great Idea!" And you wouldn't want that!
I'm really interested about developing for Zune: are the SDKs already available?
What about tweaks, skins, decals, and faceplates? I'm not so naive to think this will actually work, but it's worth a shot... Is there any possibility of MS (pre)releasing a (hi-res, preferably) blank template for those of us planning on producing 3rd party vinyl wraps? I know they don't want to give away too much about the design (still not entirely sure about the legitimacy of "the" one that's floating around the web, as it looks entirely too much like a certain competing product...), but merely allowing us to start producing and showcasing sites full of vinyl wraps would go a long way towards boosting initial sales on launch day.
This Zune thing looks nothing short of amazing, but I'm left with some questions: Will it support lossless codecs (like flac)? Is Sirius only available through WiFi or does it have a built-in satellite radio tuner? Will it come in models with hard drives bigger than 30GB? (A 100GB+ drive would be bomb 'cuz I store all my music losslessly and videos take up a lot of space.)

.Great find! Thanks for posting this, that's my something new for today learnt.
