Zune Music Marketplace Expands to Canada + New Changes to Zune Music Pass in the US

Canada Zune Music Marketplace and Zune Music Pass

We are excited to announce that Zune Music Marketplace and Zune Music Pass will roll out in Canada on October 3rd, providing access to a growing music catalog of more than 14 million tracks from all the major labels, as well as tens of thousands of indie labels. Zune Music Pass will also be available for C$9.99 per month or C$99.90 annually and can be used on Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Windows PC, Zune devices and Zune.net.

Streaming Music Videos with Zune Music Pass

Zune Music Pass in the US and Canada will now include more than just unlimited music downloads and streaming – starting October 3rd subscribers can stream tens of thousands of music videos through the Zune PC software and later this fall on Xbox 360.

US Zune Music Pass Changes

On October 3rd, in the US, we will be introducing a new, lower priced version of Zune Music Pass at $9.99 per month. The plan will provide unlimited, on-demand access to more than 14 million songs and tens of thousands of music videos. Unlike the current Zune Music Pass offering, it will not include 10 MP3s to keep each month. In addition, as part of the new $9.99 offering, subscribers will be able to download songs and synchronize them on up to a total of four devices (1 PC + any combination of PC, Zune device and Windows Phone), and continue to enjoy unlimited access to streaming on Xbox 360 and on Zune.net.

Once the new Zune Music Pass offering is available, the $14.99 plan with 10 monthly MP3 credits will no longer be available to new subscribers. However, current subscribers can stay on their existing Zune Music Pass plan if they choose and will also have access to streaming music videos.

Because if not, I’d kinda like to stay on my $150 with my 120 songs/month for at least a while. (In case I ever decide to dump the pass.)

The CRTC is filled with old dinosaurs that don’t have a clue about the way media works these days as opposed to decades ago, plus they like stifling competition to help out their friends Bell. They all need to get fired and replaced with people in their 30′s that have a much better view of current media and the content/copyright laws that need to go along with them.

I am an American zune pass subscribe. Had my Zune HD for about a year now and I love both it and the Zune software / subscription. I recently got an iphone as a work phone and I don’t understand how anyone can use iTunes.

Anyway, I was also recently relocated to Montreal for work and have been able to continue using my zune pass on my home computer and personal lap top without an issue. Where I HAVE had an issue is buying videos on my (American) xbox 360. Will this new subscription allow me to download movies and TV in Canada on my American Xbox with my American zune pass subscription? Anyone got any information on that?

The Xbox shows content based on IP Address as well as region of account. The new Zune Pass coming to Canada will allow it to be used on 360′s, however the breadth of the content has yet to be seen. I really hope it is not like Netflix in Canada, which has a severely shortened content library.

Also, Canada better not get a nerfed marketplace like it does for things like Netflix and even the Windows Phone marketplace. Our old copyright laws need to get out so we can enjoy the same content as everyone else.

Jason, I’m a firm believer that the reason our marketplaces are always nerfed is because our copyright laws are too lax. It’s a snub from the US content owners to us. If we fix the laws and get all the content we want available to us, why would we pirate?

I don’t think it is because they are too lax, but rather that they are too restrictive. Laws that say that content must be certain % of Canadian content is just silly these days. I understand they were put into place to stimulate a Canadian media (TV/Movies/Music) economy but I don’t believe we need to worry about that anymore.

I don’t think the unlimited download option lets you “keep” the songs as you can do now with the 10 free a month . I imagine if you cancel your subscription you will lose all the songs you have just downloaded.

Current subscribers can keep their subscriptions as is but they will also get access to the music videos. New subscribers will not be able to choose the $15 with 10 free tracks after Oct 3rd.

So does this now mean I can buy a new Zune again? I’ve been looking to get a new Zune HD and upgrade from my 4GB Zune I’ve had for years. Seeing as no Canadian Retailer carries the Zune physical product, and the Zune Store blocks Canadian purchases of the hardware.

Just get a Windows Phone. My Samsung Focus handles a 16Gb Kingston Class 4 microSD card with no problems. With the addition of Zune Pass to Canada I will have a somewhat infinite supply of music on my phone. I currently have 14gigs on it right now and I would be hard pressed to get through it all in a short amount of time.

My Nokia N8 plays Zune pass music with no problems as well, I just have to make sure the licence on the music files are up to date before loading them on the phone.

Great news for Canada, but Germany is still waiting for a Zune Pass subscription and it’s really frustrating that after a year, nothing has changed, even though other services can offer music subscriptions for €10 per month.

That’s more expensive than Netflix. The only reason I thought that the zune pass was worth it was because it allowed you to keep 10 songs each month, which basically means that you are buying ten songs every month (10 songs for $1 each) and paying $5 for the unlimited service.

This probably also means that fewer songs are going to be available for “keeps” through song credits for those of us who do keep our subscriptions up.

How come no one is mentioning that the number of devices dropped to 4! That’s no bueno for me! I have a living room HTPC, a kitchen/office computer, a laptop, two Windows Phones and a Zune 4GB for running. I’m not totally disappointed with dropping the 10 songs/month, and of course I like paying less money, but I don’t want to lose the 6-device limit!

Here is the issue. I have 2 kids with one zune each, two wp7, computer at home and work, and 2 xbox. Anyway 8 devices. I have no problem paying extra for additional devices. But can they all be used on the same account, or do I know have to manage 2-3 different accounts

I guess the only good news for you is that the xbox does not count towards the limit. We have 2. I am in the same boat. I have a laptop, home pc and 3 WP7. I am planning on keeping the PC as the Zune Pass sync hub for the phones and forget about having it on my laptop as I only had it there to download apps. Also, they use my one account and it recognizes each device by the names you give the devices and keeps them seperate.

The XBOX 360 does not count as a device since you can only stream from the XBOX360. Only Computers that have the Zune software on it, Zune players and WP7.
I do agree with the idea to pay an additional fee for additional devices.

Nooooo, please don’t get rid of your $14.99 deal! Just yesterday I tweeted after Spotify’s announcement that I was glad I’m a Zune subscriber. But now that you’ll no longer support DRM-free download for songs, this just hurts Zune for potential future customers! From Oct 3rd Zune will only offer restricted unlimited access for free user but it’s FREE! Now of course the y do offer the ultimate option which is $9.99 and have a catalogue of 15+ million songs. Microsoft, you’re going to kill the $14.99 plan, you’ll just be announcing your death now for the service (remember Zune devices?). Now you’ll be $9.99 too, but you have 14+ million songs, you are DRM-free though (great!), you can sync up to 4 devices (awesome!) but you’re removing the option to download those 10 songs, why?! Another thing, why haven’t you become cross-platform?! Again you’re only hurting yourself and I don’t want that

Lastly, please please please PLEASE read the following thread that I made : Vote for Zune getting social network sharing features – allow Zune to scrobble my songs to Last.FM and allow Zune to show the music I’m listening to to Facebook, just like Spotify’s using Facebook Open Graph. This would be HUGE exposure for Zune and Windows Phonse. Again, you guys need to be aggressive and stop removing features!

Spotify’s US catalog is between 7 and 8 million songs. The Zune library is larger.

The Zune experience also remains superior to Spotify, and now the price is the same.

Another thing, how long has Zune been around and yet they don’t support Last.FM? Microsoft is partner with Facebook, we NEED Open Graph support just like Spotify has!

If you read HERE (first paragraph) it clearly says the 15+ millions songs are available to US, besides, they are definitely maaaany songs unavailable on Zune (you can see them listed but they’re grayed-out) – I just checked several European [indie] singers are missing on Zune but available on Spotify.

Jeeezzz!! How can some people don’t take time to think before they let some B.S. out of their mouth? How can you compare Zune which is about music and music videos to Netflix which is primarily a movie rental and movie streaming service? Two different things serving two different market. Zune is not even competing with Netflix, and you surely never see them being compared at freaking all by anybody in the entertainment and media industry. Bring Spotify or MOG to the table but Netflix? come on… Netflix is compared to Blockbuster and Amazon. Even in terms of size, it doesn’t add up. Netflix library of 20,000+ to Zune 14 Million and counting.

So sad. I was part of the V2 launch team back in 2008 but I’ve been watching the service decline for years since. Unfortunately this is Death by a Thousand Cuts – a favorite of Microsoft. Removing the 10 songs puts this in the same catagory as Spotify but with Spotify, you can listen without paying a dime. Sorry…but without opening this service up to Android users and reinstating the 10 song option, this service will not last.

I agree with many of the other posters on here already, the $14.99 monthly with the 10 downloads to keep really set the Zune pass apart from the big group of other streaming services (Pandora, Spotify, Grooveshark and so on). Dropping to $10 for streaming only just makes Zune pass one of the crowd.

Is it impossible to keep a Zune pass for the $10 fee and maybe a Zune pass GOLD for $15 with the ten songs?

This is a big mistake.

Not talking about Canada support, of course, that’s great.

But reducing the monthly fee to 9.99 BUT removing the 10 credit is NOT good at all. It will make Zune just like Spotify, which is bad. But I believe you (Zune team), already know this. What I believe is that the higher ups are getting greedy/cheap, and decided to change it. Believe me, it”s a bad idea, but hey, at least this will serve as a lesson.

Why couldn’t both be an option? I like the original better. The true value of the subscription is really $5.09, if you consider each song is 99 cents each, and you get 10 of those complimentary from the $14.99.

Make it a Zune Music Pass Plus or something. At least greater notice for those of us that occasionally do a monthly Zune Pass. 5 days was too fast. The value of the new Zune Pass doesn’t mean much to me unfortunately.

This is great news for myself, being a strong supporter of Zune since its inception in Canada. It’s a shame that US Zune Pass holders will suffer now because of this. I was really hoping we would get that keep ten program as well. Oh well. I mostly just hope this means the Zune Social network will be back up and running like it used to with badges and sharing with friends.

That more being steaming and downloading…but on the Xbox…which was already a feature?

Its October 3rd in canada and despite the announcement on the Zune Canada website that music is in the marketplace… it still tells me that content is not enabled in my region.

yeah, it showed up after i updating zune and it said that it was already up to date.
wierd.

Been waiting for this to arrive. Thanks. I enabled the subscription yesterday and was able to download a couple albums and synch to my WP7 no problem but when I use the Zune app on my phone it doesn’t give me anyway to access songs via the marketplace! The search options just show me games and apps.

Try it again. Windows Phone Marketplace updates were rolling, not all on 10/3. You should have it now.

zune is a very bad system. don’t use it. they take your accout info and keep charging it. i suggest that you use youtube or any other music provider.
